City of Midland Health Services has confirmed
West Nile Virus (WNV) in Midland County
mosquitoes for the first time this year.

The Texas Department of State Health Services urges people to not give mosquitoes a biting chance by following these steps to protect themselves and their families from West Nile and other diseases spread by mosquitoes.

WEAR long sleeves and pants. Create a barrier to mosquito bites by covering up.

APPLY insect repellent. Use EPA-registered repellent such as those containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol or 2-undecanone.

REMOVE standing water. Emptying out water that accumulates in toys, tires, trash cans, buckets, clogged rain gutters and plant pots will deny mosquitoes a place to lay their eggs and reproduce.

The sport they lived for, the friends they always wanted to see, when a child pulls away from things they used to love, it can signal a mental health concern. Trust your instincts. If something feels different, a conversation with your pediatrician or school psychologist is a good first step.

Good hydration isn't a one-time thing. Kids stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water starting 30 minutes before active play and every 15 to 20 minutes during — and drinking water afterward is just as important.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends about 5 oz every 20 minutes for an 88-pound child, and 9 oz for a 132-pound adolescent. Keep the water flowing all day long.

A shift in appetite or sleep isn't always "just a phase." When eating or sleeping habits change suddenly, it can be one of the first signs your child is struggling with something bigger.

You know your child best, which means you're in the best position to notice when something feels off. It never hurts to mention what you're seeing to your pediatrician.

They may look harmless, but sparklers can burn as hot as 3,000 degrees - hot enough to ignite clothing or cause severe skin burns.

Keep a close eye on kids near sparklers this summer, and treat them with the caution any open flame deserves.

HOT TIP: Give toddlers and other small kids glow sticks instead of sparklers!

Kids are always watching.

Whether it's kindness, patience, resilience, or how we handle mistakes, children often learn more from what they observe than what they're told.

A good reminder for all of us during busy summer days when routines are looser and tempers can occasionally run shorter. ❤️

Summer means more time outside—and more opportunities for sunburn.

A mild burn can often be managed at home, but severe symptoms deserve attention.

The best treatment is prevention: shade, sunscreen, hats, and reapplying more often than you think you need to.

Little hands burn fast

Summer sunshine is great—until a metal slide turns into a frying pan. ☀️

Before your child climbs, swings, or slides, do a quick touch test on playground equipment. Metal and dark-colored surfaces can heat up surprisingly fast and cause burns.

A quick check takes seconds and can save a painful afternoon.
