🥰
Enjoy the read, and tell us whether or not you knew this already, about this pose. 🕉
❤️Utkatasana translates from Sanskrit to "fierce pose," "powerful pose," or "intense posture."
🧡B.K.S. Iyengar’s primary and most influential teacher, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, reimagined Utkatasana (Chair Pose) in the 1930s.
💛Krishnamacharya adapted this shape into the modern standing "chair" version to teach strength and endurance.
💚Krishnamacharya taught this variation to his students, including Iyengar, which ultimately shaped modern postural yoga worldwide.
💙In classical texts like the Gheranda Samhita, the pose was a deep, low, grounded squat.
💜In the Gheranda Samhita (a 17th-century text on Hatha Yoga), Utkatasana, often referred to as Utkatam or the hazardous/fierce pose, is mentioned in Chapter 2 (Verse 27).
🤍It is one of the 32 foundational asanas described in the text.
🤔But how does it look???🤔
In the Gheranda Samhita, the pose is described not like the modern-day standing Chair Pose, but as a deep squatting balance.
The Posture: You squat down with the feet upright, balancing on your toes with your heels raised and placed under the muscles between your sit bones.
Arm Position: You then rest your elbows on your knees and place your fingers on your face, or hold the hands in Anjali Mudra.
