Sharing a post from LI by one of my hero’s and colleagues in limb salvage Laura Swoboda:

With September marking Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Awareness Month, it is a fitting time to contemplate how structured nursing observation and patient education can preserve mobility, prevent tissue loss, and save limbs.

In our recent article and visual guide published in the American Nurse Journal, we explore the pivotal role nurses play in early lower-extremity assessment and self-management education. The peer-reviewed literature reveals just how profound nursing's clinical impact can be when we build foot care into routine practice:

"Shoes Off" at Every Visit: Remind patients to remove shoes and socks at every diabetes appointment—not just when seeing a podiatrist!

Glycemic Control Protects Vessels: Stable blood sugar limits the onset and severity of peripheral neuropathy and PAD. Hyperglycemia impairs wound healing and increases infection susceptibility.

Daily Visual Checks: Encourage patients to perform daily checks using a small hand mirror or cellphone camera for hard-to-see areas on the soles. Many people enjoy using new software and technology like infrared scanners.

Footwear & Care: Recommend clean, moisture-wicking diabetic socks, checking inside shoes before putting them on, and strictly avoiding walking barefoot—even indoors.

Gentle Hygiene: Clean feet daily with mild soap, dry thoroughly (especially between toes), moisturize dry skin, and avoid soaking feet to preserve skin barrier integrity.

To make every step count for our patients this PAD Awareness Month we need to see their feet. Share this post with your clinical teams, save the infographic for your practice, and keep those "dogs", as the youth call them, protected. 🛟

⭐ Shout-out to Jessi Runyan! ⭐

“You, my dear, are AWESOME! Today is the least pain I’ve had in my feet in MONTHS!”

— JM, one very satisfied patient 💕

Nothing makes our day quite like hearing that a patient is feeling better and getting relief. 🙌

Way to go, Jessi! This is why we do what we do. 🩺✨

As summer winds down and routines shift, caregivers often find themselves juggling more than ever. 📋

If you're managing wound care for a family member at home, here's a simple checklist to keep things organized as schedules change:

- Set a consistent daily time for wound checks and dressing changes.
- Keep all wound care supplies in one labeled, easy-to-access location.
- Write down any changes in wound appearance such as size, color, or drainage and share with your provider.
- Know the signs of infection: increased redness, warmth, swelling, or odor.

You don't have to do this alone. HealWell's care team is here to support patients and their families. 💙

Chronic wounds and diabetes go hand in hand more often than most people realize. 🩺

As schedules pick back up this time of year, it's easy to deprioritize daily foot checks, but that's exactly when problems start. 👣

Here's a quick daily routine that takes less than five minutes:

1. After bathing, inspect both feet completely, including the top, bottom, and between toes.
2. Look for any redness, blisters, cuts, or unusual skin changes.
3. Moisturize the feet but avoid applying lotion between the toes.
4. Wear properly fitted, clean socks and shoes every single day.
5. If anything looks off, call for a wound evaluation right away, because early care prevents major complications.
