Chronic illness is NOT A LIFESTYLE TREND!

Having a complex health condition that disrupts your entire life is not “cool.” This TELEGRAPH article is sickening. Being unable to work, spending thousands of dollars trying to find answers, sitting in hospital beds, being passed from doctor to doctor, and watching the life you once knew change before your eyes is not a “lifestyle trend.”

I know because I have lived it.

When people with chronic illness share their stories publicly, they are not trying to make illness an identity. Many are doing something that patients were afraid to do for generations: talk about it. They are raising awareness about illnesses people cannot always see. They are helping another person recognize symptoms. They are showing someone who has been dismissed for years that they are not alone. And sometimes they are simply asking the rest of us for a little empathy!

I remember what it cost me physically, emotionally, financially, and personally to be sick. There was absolutely nothing “cool” about it.

People should be creating a culture where people with complex illnesses are heard, investigated, supported, and given every opportunity to regain their lives, not shamed for letting us see what those lives actually look like.
