Larry D. Crawford
Aug 30, 1956 - May 31, 2026

Age 69, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital. He was born on August 30, 1956, in Ypsilanti, Michigan to William and Lela (Williams) Crawford. On May 24, 2018, he married Sheri Belanger in Ypsilanti, Michigan and she survives.

Larry had a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles. He spent many weekends at the dragstrip racing alongside his son, William, creating memories that both cherished. When he wasn't at the track, Larry could often be found riding his Harley on the open road. He also enjoyed attending car shows, where friends and fellow enthusiasts knew him for his trademark clean and polish—never allowing a vehicle to leave without giving it a little extra shine. Above all else, Larry treasured his family. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, attending their school activities and sporting events, and proudly supporting them every chance he had. Whether it was cheering from the stands or driving them to practice, Larry was always there with encouragement, love, and a smile.

Besides his loving wife, Sheri, he is survived by his sons, William (Brooke) Crawford and Brandon Crawford; granddaughter, Savannah; grandson, Brady; mother-in-law, Bonnie Belanger; sisters-in-law, Terri (Bob) Ferguson and Lori (Dan) Thompson; along with several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Milan Free Methodist Church, Milan, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until the time of sharing beginning at 6:30 p.m. Contributions may be made to St. Jude and Drag Racing Association of Women : www.drawfasthelp.org

Gertrude T. Driscoll of Milan, Michigan, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 25, 2026. She was born to Joseph and Theresa Loewengruber on July 14, 1934 in Detroit, MI. Milan was her home since 1963 until she moved to Brighton in 2023.

Survived by son Michael Driscoll of Plymouth, Michigan; daughter Patricia (Anthony) Garbacik of Brighton, Michigan. Also survived by grandchildren Kyle Penn, Jack (Brooke) Driscoll, Joshua Penn, Joseph Driscoll, Jenna Driscoll and Andrew Garbacik. Also survived by many nephews and nieces.

Gertrude grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School in River Rouge. This is where she met Thomas. They were married February 4, 1956 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

After they were married, they lived in a house on Deacon Street in Detroit. After working various jobs, they decided to open a drive-in restaurant known as The Little Skipper in 1960 in Milan. In 1963 they purchased a house in Milan and started a family with the birth of Michael followed by Patricia in 1965.

Trudi, as most people called her, enjoyed time with family. She loved games. Euchre, Bingo and the Left/Center/Right game. Even though she wouldn’t admit it, she also was a foodie. Some of her favorite foods were chili hot dogs, liver and onions and chicken pot pie. Being in the restaurant business she was always comparing various foods she tried, especially the chili dogs. She was known as the local food critic at her Senior Apartment complex at Brookdale in Brighton. She enjoyed her time living at Brookdale and made many new friends there.

Many of the former employees from the restaurant remained in close contact with Trudi until her passing. She would have in-person visits, phone calls, cards and letters from the many that she had known for years. That always put a smile on her face and gave her great enjoyment. It also brought back memories and stories of the past.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Gertrude’s life with her family on Friday May 8, 2026 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a Rosary service at 7:00 PM at the Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan. A memorial funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Milan at 11:00 AM and a viewing prior to the mass at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her name be made to Covenant House (covenanthouse.org), The Capuchin Fathers (thecapuchins.org), and Humane Society of Huron Valley (hshv.org).

Walter "Jeff" Washington was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1946 to Jeffery II "Daddy Jeff" and Louis Washington.
He was one of twelve children, raised in Detroit before later moving to Milan, Michigan. Jeff was known as an ambitious, protective, generous, and charismatic man—someone who always "told it like it is." From an early age, he aspired to follow in his father's footsteps.
As a teenager, he met the love of his life, Jennifer, while skating at Sumpter Skating Rink. The two were married in 1966 and remained inseparable for nearly 60 years. They were blessed with two sons, Troy and Mark Washington.
Jeff's hobbies included attending hot rod car shows, where he proudly showcased his beautiful 1932 Ford Victoria and won many awards. He was also a familiar presence at the Woodward Dream Cruise, attending each year since 1995.
If he wasn't working, Jeff loved building with his hands. In fact, he built his own home and those of others. He loved boating, often taking friends and family along for rides on Belleville Lake while Motown music played in the background. He also enjoyed watching and caring for the variety of fish in his aquarium. During the colder months, Jeff and Jennifer would travel to their home in Las Vegas, where they enjoyed the warmth and time together.

An Activist in the Making
Jeff Washington began his career at Ford Motor Company's Wayne Assembly Plant (WAP) on March 13, 1964. From the very beginning, he made history as the first Black person at WAP to be classified as a Gun Welder Repairman. In 1976, while continuing his work at the plant, he was appointed UAW Benefits Representative.
Jeff's journey in UAW Local 900 was marked by dedication and steady leadership. He served on the Executive Board and held positions as Guide, Recording Secretary, and Vice President before being elected President of UAW Local 900 in 1984. He led with strength and purpose for 24 years, retiring in 2008 as the longest-serving Local President in UAW history. His 44½-year career at Ford was marked not just by longevity, but by lasting impact.
As a leader in the labor movement, Jeff took pride in protecting people. He fought against unfair labor practices while safeguarding wages and benefits for working families. If you had a problem, you knew to call Jeff—he stood on business, and he made sure his members were protected. As a National Negotiator for multiple terms, he helped save thousands of jobs, brought product into the plants, and negotiated contracts that continue to benefit families to this day.
Jeff was instrumental in creating opportunities and improving everyday working conditions. He helped send hourly workers to Japan to learn team-based operations and introduced improvements such as astroturf and rubber mats to ease the strain of long hours on the line. He also worked to remove physical barriers within the plant, breaking down divisions between salaried and hourly employees to reinforce that everyone was part of the same team.
Under Jeff's leadership, Wayne Assembly Plant became a place of growth and innovation. It was among the first to establish a fitness center inside the plant, bring educational programs onsite, and develop alternative work schedules, including the four-day work week. He also played a key role in bringing a stamping plant to the location, creating over 1,100 jobs.
Through it all, Jeff built more than a workplace—he built a culture rooted in loyalty, hard work, dedication, and compassion. He believed deeply that you never turn your back on your brother or sister.
Jeff will be remembered for many things, but especially for how he made people feel. He had a way of showing up—whether attending funerals, visiting hospitals, or simply checking in. He made people feel seen and heard. He treated everyone like family, and that was his superpower.
Jeff Washington, known as "The Blueprint," was the example others followed—the one who set the standard, paved the way, and showed what leadership truly looks like. His legacy lives on not only in what he accomplished, but in the lives he touched. He is, and always will be, a lasting part of UAW history.
Jeff was also an active life member of the NAACP and a devoted supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, reflecting his lifelong commitment to uplifting others both within and beyond his community.
Jeff passed away on April 8, 2026, in his home.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jennifer "Bonnie" "Fat Baby" Washington; his son, Troy Washington; his daughter-in-law, Angela Washington; his grandchildren, DeAndre "Buddy" Washington, Britany (Washington) Mitchell and Matthew Mitchell, Ashley Washington, and Aaron Cook; and his step-grandchild, La'Antwynette Harden. He is also survived by his sisters, Evonne Johnson-Dudley, Joyce Frierson, Anita Washington-Jenkins, and Vera Washington; his great-grandchildren, Autumn, Matthew Jr., Michael, and Aubree Mitchell; and his godchildren, Timika Hopson and Michael Jeffery Thomas, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by his son, Mark Washington; his sister, Jeane Joy; and his brothers, Jeffery III, George, Edward, Terry, Gregory, and Kenneth Washington.

Lura Francis Hanschu
Milan, Michigan

Age 38, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital. She was born August 18, 1987, in Springfield, Ohio, to Michael and Kimberly (Kerns) Hanschu.

Lura Francis Hanschu loved sunsets, flowers, cozy blankets, growing things, her cats and the simple beauty around her. Her laugh was full bodied, shoulder shaking, infectious joy. Whether supplying trick candles or facilitating the chaotic shenanigans of her nieces and nephews she was always part of the fun.

She had a tenacious desire to help others graduating from Saginaw Valley State University’s School of Social Work and later through her work at the Ann Arbor V.A. Early on she discovered her love of gifting and continued to spoil those she loved. You never had to ask her twice to see a movie, even if she had to wake up just in time to quote her favorite lines. Later she was determined to have a home where she could welcome others. She loved being a part of the Milan community where she could attend events. Her church family at Milan Free Methodist Church was always a source of support and love. She shared her beliefs freely and often with an extra dose of sass.

Lura's life was an abundant reflection of the handiwork of God. No one knew Lura long before discovering she loved Jesus. Her church was a place where she could worship the God who sustained her hope. Through every struggle, obstacle, hospital stay and surgery she never lost her faith that God had a purpose and plan for her life. To her very last moments she chose to let God write her story, until the end. Believing that even when her earthly body failed her, the Christ who died so she could be whole could use it to continue someone else's story. Today God's handiwork lives on through Lura's kidneys as they give two other families the chance to continue their stories. While she dances on the plains of Heaven to the music of the angels.

Lura joins her grandfathers, John Kerns, Richard Hanschu and James Crippen in death. She leaves behind her grandmothers Joyce Crippen and Lura Fay Hanschu, her parents, Michael and Kimberly Hanschu. Her siblings, James and Hannah Hanschu, Marc and Melissa Schwerin, David and Meredith Bowbeer.

Her joy and love of a good joke will live on in her nieces and nephews; Ella and Caleb Hanschu, Katelyn, Addelyn, Kimberly and Jonathan Schwerin; Michael, Christian and Jacquelyn Bowbeer.

Visitation will be held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan on Sunday, April 19, 2026 from 2:00 – 5:00 PM, and on Monday, April 20, 2026 at Milan Free Methodist Church from 10:00 AM until the time of funeral service at 11:00 AM. To honor Lura’s joyful spirit, the family encourages guests to wear something colorful.

Memoriams to celebrate Lura’s love of Christian music can be made to Family Life Radio Letters of condolence may be sent to 350 Canfield St. Milan, MI 48160
