✨Balsamo or SPATHOXORTO as it’s named in Greece & Crete is Saint John’s Wort - a hypericum species that has a lot of history and medicinal uses as an anti-inflammatory, antiviral and has been shown in studies to be just as effective as medication for mild to moderate depression (consult with your integrative physician if you want to use it this way).
What’s with the name?
The name in Greek, Spatho (sword) horto (plant) refers to its traditional use of healing wounds.
One of the other magical properties of the plant is the way that the oil turns red due to its chemical properties. For that reason, it is also associated with the “blood” of St John the Baptist and because the plant blooms around the feast state of St. John, which is June 24.
I think it’s cool that my Uncle john makes it and uses it medicinally Rose Malindretos 💗
It can be used safely and effectively as an anti-inflammatory oil the way it has been used for centuries:
Recipe for making St. John’s Wort Oil:
1.)Pick the flowers and leaves respectfully.
2.)Put in a clean glass jar and top with extra-virgin olive oil.
3.) Let it sit out in the sun for a couple of weeks periodically, shaking it and opening the top of the jar to let out any air and to prevent it from spoiling due to moisture.
3.) Strain it and put it in a clean jar to use (you can rinse out the same jar you used to prepare it.
You know it’s done when the oil is a beautiful deep red.
✨How to use St. John’s wort Oil:
Apply at topically for any aches, pains just avoid broken skin and enjoy it, soothing healing properties as well as antiviral properties.
💗Don’t forget to thank the plant and mother nature for this beautiful gift of Healing.
Ps you may notice that the St. John’s wort plant in Crete has much smaller leaves and flowers because of the hot climate than the one that grows wild in the US. I have other clips of the US species if you want to check it out. #βάλσαμο #σπαθόχορτο
