Navigating Agitation in Dementia Care:
What helps?
✔️ Distraction techniques – A change of scenery or a simple activity can shift focus.
✔️ Comforting favorites – Ice cream, soothing music, and familiar routines can work wonders.
✔️ A positive, upbeat attitude – Your energy sets the tone!
According to Dr. Liz Geriatrics Agitation is one of the most common, and challenging, behaviors in dementia care. It can show up unexpectedly, often underlying other behavior issues. As dementia progresses, many elders experience moments of restlessness, anxiety, irritability, repetitive questioning, or even yelling and pacing. Because of this caregiver education is key. When we understand that agitation is often a form of unspoken communication, we can respond with patience, compassion, and effective strategies.
Small adjustments can make a big difference.
