🚨 Launching in August: The second cohort of our Su***de Postvention Certificate Course! Participants will explore the foundations of su***de prevention, the history and research behind postvention, and how it differs from other therapeutic approaches after a loss. Emphasis is placed on understanding trauma responses, cultural factors in grief, and strategies for supporting individuals and communities affected by su***de. The course also guides participants in designing and implementing effective postvention teams, including needs assessments, partnership building, training, and culturally responsive communication. A final project will involve compiling local and national resources and developing a needs assessment and/or implementation plan for a postvention response within the participants’ community.

August is National Wellness Month, and in recognition, we are highlighting a MCW resource, MCWell360!💚

MCWell360 is MCW's wellness program, and it was designed to promote six key dimensions of health: emotional, physical, financial, social and spiritual, environmental, and intellectual. Numerous resources focused on these six dimensions can be found on InfoScope's "wellness" page.

Additionally, MCWell360 offers the opportunity to be a wellness champion for your division or department. A wellness champion serves as an enthusiastic ambassador and resource for their work location to support MCW’s Wellness Program and culture of well-being. DSRH members Rachel Glassford and Tricia Monroe serve as wellness champions for the Comprehensive Injury Center (CIC)!

As part of MCWell360's efforts to promote wellness, the program creates and distributes a monthly newsletter to the MCW community that includes a wellness events, calendar, department wellness opportunities, and a self-care calendar. Noteworthy for August is the opportunity to participate in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. This will be taking place in person August 24th from 9am-4pm. Slots are still available for those interested in joining!

As we grow closer to September, AKA National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month (NSPAM), we also are excited to announce the annual NSPAM food truck event! This will take place Monday, September 14th, from 11am-1pm in front of the Hub. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Prevent Su***de Greater Milwaukee (PSGM), so mark your calendars and come join us to support su***de prevention in our community!

This past Tuesday, we had our annual DSRH retreat!👥

Our team spent the day together at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center reviewing the work we've done over the past year, brainstorming new potential projects that align with our mission and vision, and setting strategic goals for the next year. Every year, this retreat serves not only as an important meeting for the division to evaluate and organize but also as a means to further our bond as a team and remind ourselves of why we chose this field of work and how important it is.

Not to mention the great view we had of the city, Lake Michigan, and the art museum this year😍

The DSRH remains dedicated to lived experience, collective action, utilizing a public health approach, disseminating new knowledge, and addressing disparities in su***de outcomes. Thank you all for the continued support as we do this work.💚

Kinda chic to know we can all play a role in preventing su***de. ✨

In 2024, through a partnership with the U.S. and Wisconsin Departments of Veterans Affairs, we received a grant to extend the work of su***de mortality reviews (SMR) across the state of Wisconsin. With the funding, we launched a statewide SMR team that has focused on reviewing Veteran su***de deaths in Wisconsin to explore missed opportunities for intervention and enhance a community's ability to respond and prevent future su***de deaths.

We're excited to share the team's first annual report! The report outlines recommendations made during meeting reviews and identifies next steps and trends. Read the full report and learn more about the SMR team at https://www.mcw.edu/departments/comprehensive-injury-center/divisions/division-of-su***de-research-and-healing/su***de-mortality-review.
