💠 Self care isn't all about massages and time out or away.

DBT Skills. Module : Emotion Regulation. Skill : Learning to Feel Our Feelings. This excellent post is via page @ BuddhismPage FB

Dr. Marsha Linehan, creator of DBT spent over a year in a Buddhist community learning which aspects of Buddhishm she could adapt to make DBT effective

''Many people believe they need to stop feeling sadness, anger, fear, or disappointment.

But Buddhism teaches something different.

Suffering is not created by emotions themselves. It is created when we cling to them, deny them, or let them control our actions.

Emotions are like passing weather. They arise, they stay for a while, and they pass. Our task is not to fight the storm, but to observe it with awareness.

-------------------------------------------------------------

1. Pause

Before reacting, stop for a moment.

Create a little space between what you feel and what you do. That single pause can prevent words you'll regret and decisions you'll wish you could take back.

----------------------------------------------------------

2. Name It

Ask yourself, "What am I really feeling?"

Is it anger... or hurt?
Fear... or uncertainty?
Loneliness... or rejection?

When you name an emotion, it begins to lose its power over you.

------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Feel It

Don't suppress your feelings, and don't judge yourself for having them.

Allow yourself to experience them without becoming them.

You are not your anger.
You are not your anxiety.
You are the awareness that notices them.

-------------------------------------------------------------

4. Ask Why

Every strong emotion is trying to teach you something.

What expectation was not met?
What fear was triggered?
What attachment is causing this suffering?

Understanding the root is where healing begins.

------------------------------------------------------

5. Release

Take a deep breath.
Write in a journal.
Talk to someone you trust.
Meditate.
Spend time in nature.

Healing happens when emotions are expressed in healthy ways instead of being carried for years.

------------------------------------------------------

6. Shift

Once you've learned the lesson, don't keep replaying the pain.

Redirect your energy toward something that brings peace, kindness, growth, or purpose.

The past cannot be changed, but this moment can.

The Buddha taught that awareness transforms suffering into wisdom.

Your feelings are not your enemies.

They are visitors.

Welcome them with compassion, learn what they came to teach, and let them go when it's time.

That is how inner peace begins''.
