Tomorrow is World Lung Cancer Day.

Lung cancer causes more deaths in Wisconsin than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer combined. While smoking is the leading risk factor, 1 in 10 people with lung cancer have never smoked.

At Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, researchers are working to detect lung cancer earlier, uncover new treatment targets, and stay one step ahead of treatment resistance.

The Department of Radiation Oncology at MCW proudly congratulates Dr. Beth Erickson, J. Frank and Vera B. Wilson Professor of Radiation Oncology and Chief of Brachytherapy Services, on her election as President-elect of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

Dr. Erickson is an internationally recognized authority in brachytherapy and image-based treatment planning, with a clinical focus on gynecologic, gastrointestinal and eye/orbital cancers. Her selection to lead an organization representing more than 10,000 members worldwide speaks directly to the depth of her clinical expertise and her sustained commitment to advancing the field — including her service as ASTRO's Education Council Chair and her leadership in developing the Society's clinical guideline for endometrial cancer.

Dr. Erickson will take office as President-elect and assume the ASTRO Presidency in September 2027. As President, she has outlined priorities including strengthening educational opportunities across the radiation oncology care team, elevating the visibility of radiation therapy's curative potential, and advocating for reimbursement policies that preserve the physician-patient relationship in treatment decisions.

We are honored to call Dr. Erickson a colleague and could not be prouder of this well-deserved recognition.

Join us in congratulating Ruth Woehlke on receiving a Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center Graduate Fellowship! 👏

Woehlke is hoping to learn whether changes in the blood vessels that support tumor growth in triple-negative breast cancer can serve as early indicators of how the cancer is progressing or responding to treatment. By validating a new imaging approach, called shortwave infrared imaging (SWIR), Woehlke aims to establish new biomarkers to help guide treatment decisions and improve surgical visualization of tumor margins.

Can a T-cell engager, antibody drug conjugate, and split-dose chemotherapy be used together to treat elderly patients with large B-cell lymphoma? A phase 2 investigator-initiated trial led by Nirav Shah, MD, is testing this combination to improve patient outcomes.

Researchers in the lab of Pradeep Chaluvally-Raghavan, PhD, developed an RNA-based therapy that may shut down FXR1, a protein that helps tumors survive, spread, and resist treatment, in ovarian cancer models.

Their findings, which were recently published in Nature Communications, could have implications for other cancers where FXR1 is overexpressed.
