“If we start hospice care, are we locked in forever?” 🔓

A common reason families hesitate to call hospice earlier is the fear that electing the benefit signs away their freedom. They worry that if a new treatment becomes available, or if they change their mind, they cannot turn back.

Here is the truth: You are always in control.

Hospice care is completely voluntary. A patient or their healthcare proxy can "revoke" (pause or cancel) the hospice benefit at any point, for any reason—whether that is to seek aggressive hospital treatment, enroll in a clinical trial, or simply transfer to another provider. If you decide to revoke, your standard Medicare benefits instantly resume without penalty. And if you ever decide you want comfort care again down the road, you can re-elect hospice at any time. You never give up your autonomy.

A gentle reminder for the family caregivers doing the heavy emotional lifting this week: Your job is to love them, not to fix what cannot be fixed. 🌿

When a loved one is navigating advanced illness, it is natural to want to solve every problem. You want to fix their lack of appetite, lift their sadness, or find a way to bring back their physical energy.

When those things decline despite your best efforts, guilt often rushes in.

Please release that weight. A declining body is following a natural process that you cannot control. What you can provide is your steady presence, your hand to hold, and your voice reassuring them they are safe. Let the Caring Hearts clinical team carry the burden of medical management so you can simply be there as family.

September brings a distinct shift to the Oregon air. The mornings are getting crisper, and the season is undeniably turning toward autumn. 🍂

When your loved one is on hospice care, the changing of seasons can trigger a sudden, profound wave of sadness. As the world gears up for fall, you might find yourself quietly doing the heartbreaking math of the holidays: "Will they still be here for Thanksgiving? Is this our last autumn together?"

This is called anticipatory grief, and it is a completely normal reaction to the shifting calendar. You do not have to force yourself to feel festive or excited about the changing season. It is okay to just take it one single day at a time.

“If I give my loved one morphine, will they become addicted?” 🤍

This fear is completely understandable. We are constantly taught about the dangers of strong pain medications. However, at the end of life, the rules of medicine shift entirely.

When a person is experiencing severe, terminal pain or "air hunger" (shortness of breath), their body processes medications differently. The small, carefully measured doses of morphine we use in hospice do not create a "high" or lead to addiction; they simply go directly toward neutralizing the pain receptors and relaxing the lungs.

Our goal is never to heavily sedate your loved one, but to find the perfect, gentle balance that completely relieves their suffering so they can rest peacefully and comfortably.

This National Senior Citizens Day, we are celebrating the spark that never fades! Society often assumes that when someone enters hospice, their life becomes entirely defined by their illness. We see the exact opposite every day.

Our senior patients are incredibly sharp, witty, and full of life. They are the grandfathers who still crack the best jokes, the grandmothers who still insist on having their hair perfectly done, and the fierce individuals who know exactly what they want.

Our goal is never to change who they are, but to manage their symptoms so their beautiful, vibrant personalities can continue to shine through. To all the seniors continuing to live life on their own terms: We celebrate you today!
