Here’s a smoother, more polished version that keeps the emotion and story intact:

This mama fought so hard for the natural water birth she had envisioned. After two days of early labor that wasn’t progressing, she was beginning to feel defeated. Arriving at the birth center, with contractions just two minutes apart, she was discouraged to hear she was only 4 cm dilated.

But she reached deep into her well of strength, trusted her body, and just 3.5 hours later, she welcomed her precious son into the world.

What an incredible reminder of the power, resilience, and determination that birth can reveal. 🤍

A big thank you to Fort Worth Birth Center midwife Katie and birth assists Meagon and Rachel.

I had the privilege of serving as the doula for her older brother’s birth as well. It is such a profound honor to walk alongside this precious family again and witness another beautiful chapter in their story.

Mom texted me around 9:00 p.m. to let me know her contractions had started up again after two days of prodromal labor. Around 11:30 p.m., she decided to lie down and get some much-needed rest, but by 1:30 a.m., the contractions had become intense once again. She continued laboring beautifully at home, trusting her body and allowing labor to unfold naturally.

Around 5:00 a.m., she knew it was time to head to the birth center, and I wasn’t far behind. I arrived at 6a.m. to find her having contractions every minute. We quickly helped her into the birthing tub, and just two contractions later, their beautiful surprise baby girl made her entrance into the world.

From two days of prodromal labor to meeting her daughter just moments after arriving at the birth center, this birth was a beautiful reminder that babies have a timing all their own.

It was such an honor to witness this incredible mother trust her body and bring her sweet little baby earthside.

The best way to start my morning.

Shout out to Susan, Jen, and Megan at the Fort Worth Birth Center.

The placenta is an entire organ a woman’s body creates from scratch each pregnancy to sustain her baby for more than 40 weeks. When we remind new mothers to be gentle with themselves and take recovery slowly, this is one of the reasons why—the surface left behind on the uterus after the placenta detaches is essentially a wound the size of this organ.

Anatomy of the placenta:
The smooth, glossy side—where the umbilical cord inserts—is the side your baby curled up against throughout pregnancy. The thicker, textured side is the maternal side, the part that was firmly attached to the uterine wall. The pale white flecks you see within the tissue are calcifications, a normal sign of a placenta maturing as baby approaches term. This particular placenta was 40 weeks and 5 days old.

The umbilical cord carried blood, oxygen, and nutrients to your baby until the moment of birth. And the thin, transparent membrane hanging below is the amniotic sac—the protective layer that surrounded your baby and kept them cushioned and safe.

Placentas are nothing short of extraordinary and a true reminder that we were fearfully and wonderfully made.

Birth rarely unfolds exactly as we envision it. As this mom approached the end of her pregnancy, she began showing signs of preeclampsia. After several elevated blood pressures and thoughtful conversations with her providers, she chose to move forward with an induction. Her hope was for a slow, gentle process without Pitocin, but as her numbers continued to rise, her providers recommended magnesium alongside Pitocin for safety.

Magnesium brought its own challenge. Because it’s a muscle relaxer, it confined her to the bed — taking away the movement and mobility she had planned on. This can often pose a real mental block, because it suddenly feels as though options are limited. Thankfully, there were still plenty of positions in bed we could help her into so she could stay active and help baby move down.

She remained grounded through every intense contraction, resting when she could. Baby’s heart rate began to fluctuate, requiring close monitoring. And as the hours passed, new hurdles appeared one after another: meconium in the waters, a stubborn cervical lip, rising creatinine levels. Each challenge demanded patience, resilience, prayers, and trust.

Then finally — the moment we had all been waiting for. Ten centimeters, complete, and ready to push.

After two and a half hours of powerful, determined pushing — supported by three midwives, an encouraging husband, her doula, and a devoted team of nurses — she brought her perfect baby girl into the world.

I can’t put into words how incredibly proud I am of this sweet mama.

At 38 weeks, she faced an unexpected induction due to fetal growth restriction (IUGR). While it wasn’t the birth she had envisioned, she met every unexpected turn with remarkable grace, strength, and trust.

She welcomed every position change the nurses and I suggested to help her baby move lower, never once complaining—only focusing on the goal.

Then, this first-time mama amazed every single person in the room. With just seven powerful pushes, she brought her beautiful daughter earth-side.

One of the most incredible moments came after birth. Her baby’s umbilical cord stopped pulsating after one minute, and almost immediately afterward, her placenta was born on its own.

What an honor it was to witness this mother’s quiet strength, unwavering trust, and the beautiful arrival of her precious baby girl. 🤍
