Isn’t this the truth of life?

Walking away from something you love, knowing the timing isn’t for you right now.

Going against protocol to report abuse.

Risking being liked to speak up for what is right.

Doing the work when no one is watching.

Ending a lifelong friendship that no longer serves you.

Sharing your truth despite the judgement.

Walking away from someone you love that was never meant for you.

Trading your comfort for the hard conversations.

To be honest, I rarely ever read a child’s previous IEP or evaluation before meeting the child myself and making up my own mind about a child.

Instead, I build rapport and then start planning how I will deliver therapy.

Give yourself permission to carve out time within the first (or couple) sessions to build rapport with a child.

👉🏼 Get down to their level, even if it means sitting on the floor
👉🏼 Follow their lead and imitate the CHILD’S actions and sounds before placing a demand for them to imitate YOU
👉🏼 Let them choose the activity or provide choices within reason
👉🏼 Simply PLAY and allow yourself to be GOOFY
👉🏼 Respect the child’s autonomy
👉🏼 Instead of placing demands, observe how they play, make choices, explore, and communicate

How else do you build rapport with your students?

Aggressive behaviors can be a 🔥 topic in the schools and truth be told, many are not properly trained by the district in how to work with neurodiverse children.

Behaviors are the number one reason I’ve watched many talented teachers quit year after year.

Here are the strategies I use with my own children and students at school.

I hope my children never wait for an invitation to a table they don’t belong at.

I hope they never change themselves to fit into a crowd that will never accept who they truly are.

I hope they are never thrown breadcrumbs and convince themselves it is a feast.

I hope they never settle for second best or allow themselves to be chosen out of convenience.

Instead, I hope they step away on their own two feet and build their own table and make others feel welcome.

Typically, I use my iSpy board to target articulation/speech sounds as a filler activity. Either in the beginning/end of the session or during transition times so no time is wasted as it only takes a few minutes.

How else would you use it to 🎯 speech sounds?
