at Birth | Roots Birth Center 🌱

At Roots, we support whoever you choose to be with you when you give birth- including your other children.

If you choose to bring your other child(ren), having a separate support person for them is key. That way if you or your child are needing space in various moments of birth- both of your needs can be met without compromising the other. ✨

Some families that birth at Roots have loved having their other children present in the room during birth.

Others have had big sibling(s) come after baby is born, during that early snuggly bliss postpartum.

Others have chosen to wait to introduce the newest family member at home after discharge (average 4-6 hours postpartum).

You know what is best for your family. Just know that your littles (or bigs) will be truly welcome in your birth space at Roots. 🪴

Well-Person Care at Roots Community Birth Center 🌱

Well-Person visits are with our midwife Willa, CNM. ✨

At these visits, folks can get their annual physicals, reproductive health management (including breast exams, birth control options, and post-natal care), as well as chronic disease management (ex: high blood pressure, depression, diabetes, etc). 🩺

Whether folks come to Roots for prenatal care or well-person care, our goal is to create and maintain a personal connection with each family. We want everyone in our care to feel safe and known. ✨

At each prenatal visit you can expect:

Why is Prenatal Care important? 🤰🏾

🌱 Regular prenatal care helps to identify if you and baby are healthy and thriving.

🌱 According to World Health Organization (WHO), pregnant people should receive a minimum of 8 prenatal visits during their pregnancies, which has been shown to better detect potential pregnancy complications as they develop.

🌱 Regular prenatal care has been shown to reduce the risk of complications in pregnancy for both the birthing person and the baby.

🌱 At Roots, prenatal care isn't just checking a box to get diagnostics on you and baby. It's also a time for you and your birth support to ask questions, share your stresses and your joys, and get better connected to our team of midwives.

New (to us) Midwife at Roots 🌱

Roots is thrilled to have Kate join our team! ✨

Kate Saumweber Hogan (she/her) is a Certified Professional Midwife and Licensed Midwife with experience practicing in both birth center and home birth settings. 🪴

She has supported families through pregnancy and birth since 2004, beginning her work as a doula before graduating from Bastyr University’s Department of Midwifery in 2010. Kate is deeply passionate about trusting the process of physiologic birth and providing individualized, relationship-centered care that supports informed choice and empowers families in their decision making. She values continuity of care and believes strongly in trauma-informed, collaborative care coordination across providers and settings to help families feel supported throughout the perinatal journey.

Kate feels honored to care for diverse families, including LGBTQ+ individuals and families, with warmth, respect, and affirming care. ✨

Kate lives in Minneapolis and enjoys spending time outdoors, paddleboarding, running, saunaing, and adventuring with her 3 children, all born with the support of midwives and doulas. 🌱

Fun fact - Kate was Rachel’s preceptor ten years ago!
