After giving birth, Cha Yang was caring for four children in a shared single bedroom. She didn’t have the time, space, or energy to prepare meals for herself.

When her care team at M Health Fairview Clinic – Rice Street learned she was struggling, a food resource navigator stepped in to help connect her with support.

Through our food is medicine program, Cha enrolled in a medically tailored meal program and began receiving culturally specific, ready-to-eat Hmong meals delivered directly to her home.

This is one way our care teams are addressing food insecurity — not just by connecting patients to food, but by connecting them to food that fits their health, culture, and daily life.

When 39-year-old Shannon Peterson went into cardiac arrest, every minute mattered.

Her fiancé called 911 and began CPR. Within minutes, M Health Fairview's mobile helicopter ECMO program was activated. A specialized cardiac care team and ECMO technology flew from M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center aboard a Life Link III helicopter directly to Shannon in Belle Plaine.

Last week, Shannon reunited with the first responders and care teams — including teams from Ridgeview Hospitals and Clinics — who helped save her life.

The reunion celebrated Shannon's second chance and the nation's first mobile ECMO program, an innovative model of care that brings advanced cardiac support directly to patients in rural communities when time is critical.

“[Shannon] is joining a small but growing community of people who've survived cardiac arrests like this,” said Dr. Jason Bartos, lead ECMO physician. “And we hope to see a lot more in the future.”

99 teams. 813 participants. More than $63,000 raised—and counting.

Thank you to every Fairview employee, family member, friend, and supporter who joined us at the American Heart Association Twin Cities Heart Walk this weekend.
Together, we raised $63,928.31 and counting to advance research, treatment, and prevention efforts for heart disease and stroke.

“Events like the Heart Walk reflect who we are as a healthcare organization,” said Jaya Kumar, MD, chief medical officer and Fairview’s executive sponsor for the Twin Cities Heart Walk. “As a leader in heart and vascular care, we know the impact of heart disease and stroke, and we are committed to changing that story. Thank you for your participation.”

We're proud to walk alongside our community in support of healthier lives and stronger hearts. ❤️

Today, these twins celebrate their first birthday. ❤️

But Fiona and Phoebe had an uncertain start in life. Carrie Zirbes’ had one of the rarest and highest-risk forms of twin pregnancies, often called mono-mono twins. Her babies shared the same placenta and amniotic sac, requiring extensive monitoring and specialized care from diagnosis through delivery.

Experts across maternal-fetal medicine, neonatal care, nursing, imaging, and delivery services came together with same goal: keep mom safe and give both babies the best chance at survival.

One year later, the twins continue to make their family and care teams proud. “They’re doing everything they should be and are active, happy, and beautiful,” Carrie said.

When Dulce Salazar started her internship at M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital, Joy Wenzel, a family nurse practitioner, made sure she never felt alone.

“From the moment I arrived, Joy greeted me with a warm smile and made me feel welcome,” Dulce said. “She introduced me to the team and created an environment where I felt supported right away.” Joy helped Dulce grow into the kind of nurse she always hoped to be through compassion, empathy, and the right guidance while navigating difficult moments with patients.

Now, Dulce has graduated with her nursing degree — with Joy by her side at her pinning ceremony. Their story celebrates what happens when mentorship goes beyond just clinical training.

During Nurses Week, we are celebrating the nurses who help create an environment where support and empathy shape the future of care. Join us in celebrating Joy, Dulce, and all of our incredible nurses. 🩺

During her first C-section, Lissa Dahlheimer watched her baby be taken across the room before she could hold her. This time was different.

With a maternal-assisted C-section, Lissa helped lift her son into the world—and brought him straight to her chest.

“Being able to see and touch my baby right away was really healing,” she said.

Even in the operating room, birth should feel personal. Our Birthplace teams are here to help it feel that way. Find out more in the comments.

Kent Hrbek, Minnesota Twins legend and World Series Champion, was just two days out from knee replacement surgery when he suffered a stroke.

Treatment and rehabilitation with M Health Fairview helped him recover. His care team also discovered the cause of the stroke: a hidden heart condition that allowed a clot to reach his brain.

Now a year into recovery, he’s sharing his story alongside neurologist Dr. Praveen Hariharan with Fox 9 to help others recognize the signs of a stroke and BE FAST.

Severe acid reflux made it difficult for 11-year-old Oliver Gilpin to eat without pain. Standard treatments weren't enough.

So, his care team took a different approach.

Pediatric gastroenterologist Aayush Gabrani, MD, with M Health Fairview and the University of Minnesota Medical School, performed an endoscopic procedure —commonly used in adults — that had never been done in a child before.

The result: relief without surgery.

Today, Oliver is pain-free.

Former Minnesota Vikings player Ronyell Whitaker was known for helping others.
After he passed away, that legacy continued. Through organ donation — and the care of M Health Fairview’s Donor Care Unit — he saved four lives.

This work takes more than one moment. It takes specialized teams and the right level of care to do it.

Our Donor Care Unit, in partnership with LifeSource, is designed to make more lifesaving transplants possible. Since it opened last year, the difference is already clear:
• 142 lives saved
• 4.1 organs per donor (well above the national average)
• 65% lung utilization (compared to ~20% nationally)

Read Ronyell’s story and how the Donor Care Unit is saving more lives in comments.
