Today is International Cat Day, so I’m putting the spotlight on Charles, the best massage therapist with paws that I know. Cats are a wonderful example of a way to be that we can strive for. They show us how to stretch often, to rest frequently, without guilt. They demonstrate a lifestyle where you massage your own body, a little bit at a time, albeit in a different way and also ask for what you need without apology.

If you have been in a session with me, you may have already met him. Charles has been known to wander into a session to lend a helping paw, or to plant himself nearby for emotional support. Charles brings the essence of healing into the room, and he simply likes to be part of the work.

This has always been one of the quiet joys of the work, the reminder that rest, play and a full range of movement (or zoomies) are not out of reach. They are both a goal and an important ingredient in how the body stays well, now and over time.

!Contest!

So, if you have been watching my self care series on YouTube, you may have spotted him making cameos therel. So here is your $10 pop quiz question:

Between each vertebra are openings where nerves exit the spinal cord. When the spine is stiff or compressed, those openings narrow which can cause numbness, tingling or pain. This exercise creates space and helps to reduce stiffness and pain.

This is a dynamic form of Cat/Cow starting from Child's Pose to open the entire spine. The extension arch activates the extensor muscles of the upper back and neck, toning and increasing blood flow. The rounded cat arch lengthens the perispinal muscles and opens the facets along the entire spine.

You can modify this for comfort with a towel or pillow under your ankles, on your thighs or under your head. No yoga experience needed. Just a mat, a few minutes, and optionally your own therapeutic kitty.

This exercise is an upper-body posture corrector and helps you combat upper-body and shoulder tension. The rotator cuff, the muscles between your shoulder blades, triceps, lats, and teres major and minor; this one exercise strengthens all of them together.

You will need a light to medium resistance band to start. Hold it at shoulder height and shoulder distance, reach up just above your hairline, then stretch your fists apart from each other, extending the arms straight to the sides, and bring the band down to the middle of your chest. Shoulder blades, squeeze together and stay dropped low on the rib cage the whole time.

Wrist position matters. Keep your wrists in a neutral position throughout.

Do you have tension in your traps and knots between your shoulder blades? This simple exercise is probably for you. Many of us spend the majority of our day closing the front of the body. Shoulders rolling forward, chest compressed, pectoral muscles shortening until that position just feels like the way things are.

This exercise works the muscles on the back side of the shoulder, the rhomboids, the lower traps, and the lats, to draw the shoulders back into stable and comfortable alignment.

The strength and tonicity of your lats are very important when it comes to shoulder health. When they are healthy and toned, they help hold your shoulders, as well as your mid and upper back, in proper alignment and take pressure off the traps and neck, as they will have to crane forward less. When they go quiet, everything above them has to work harder.

This is a simple seated row using a resistance band. No gym required. You are mimicking a rowing machine, sitting tall with a neutral spine, and squeezing the shoulder blades together with each pull. Your triceps come along for the ride.

If you cannot feel the right muscles engaging, tap just below and behind your shoulder blade. Tapping sends a sensory signal to the brain that helps it locate and recruit that muscle group.

Give it a try and let me know in the comments if it helps.
