On Tuesday, September 22, we celebrated an outstanding achievement: Courage Kenny Inpatient Rehabilitation was ranked #42 nationally by U.S. News & World Report, earning a place among the top 50 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation out of 1,131 hospitals evaluated.

This marks the second time in the past three years that Courage Kenny has been recognized among the nation's top 50 rehabilitation hospitals. This remarkable accomplishment reflects the unwavering dedication, expertise, and commitment to delivering exceptional patient care every day.

At this year’s Handiham Radio Camp, Assistive Technology Supervisor Matthew White designed and 3D-printed tactile floor plans with braille to help campers, many of whom are blind, navigate unfamiliar restrooms at Cleary Lake Regional Park.

The tactile aids allow campers to understand the restroom layout before entering, helping them move through the space with greater confidence and independence.

It's a great example of how creativity, technology and accessibility can come together to empower people of all abilities!

🛟Exciting Improvements Coming to the Stillwater Pool🛟

Beginning November 2, 2026, the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute pool in Stillwater will temporarily close for a major renovation project, with plans to reopen in March 2027.

This donor-supported project reflects our ongoing commitment to the health, wellness and recreation needs of both Courage Kenny participants and the greater Stillwater community. The renovated space will feature refreshed facilities, expanded aquatic programming opportunities and sustainable pool and whirlpool improvements designed to support the community for years to come.

The pool will remain open through October 31, giving members and participants time to enjoy the facility before construction begins. During the temporary closure, aquatic therapies and programming will transition to land-based options, and the Golden Valley pool will remain available for use. Additional information regarding purchased passes and community pool options will be shared with participants as the project moves forward.

We're proud to have hosted the Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist (CSRS™) course at Abbott through our partnership with the American Heart Association's Post-Acute Stroke Initiative.

Over three days, NeuroRecovery Unlimited provided advanced stroke rehabilitation training to 62 rehabilitation professionals from Minnesota, South Dakota and Hawaii, including 24 members of our CKRI team.

Thanks to grant funding, participants were able to attend this specialized course, valued at approximately $900 per person, at no cost. The American Heart Association also covered the $150 certification exam fee for all CKRI attendees in recognition of our role as the host site.

Opportunities like this help our clinicians continue to grow their expertise and bring the latest evidence-based rehabilitation practices to the patients and families we serve. We're grateful to the American Heart Association and NeuroRecovery Unlimited for making this training possible.

World champions once again! 🏆🏆

Congratulations to the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute MN Rolling Twins on a dominant 6-0 run at the National Wheelchair Softball Association's Wheelchair Softball World Series.

This championship marks the team's second World Series win in the last three years, adding to their 2024 title.

Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute staff in Golden Valley, alongside members of the EMPOWER Scholarship Selection Committee, welcomed the 2026 EMPOWER Scholarship recipients to campus on June 24. During their visit, recipients toured the facility and connected with leaders from across Allina and CKRI.

The EMPOWER (Encouraging Minority Participation in Occupations with Emphasis on Rehabilitation) Scholarship supports and empowers ethnically diverse students pursuing careers in rehabilitation fields.

Courage Kenny Rehab Institute-Owatonna would like to welcome back Greg Lenz, physical therapist, to our team.

Greg started with CKRI in 1998 and was a member of our team 20 years before trialing the private sector in the community. He officially returns to CKRI 6-29-2026 and brings back a wealth of experience managing a large variety of injuries and conditions including sport related injuries and orthopedic conditions.

Greg describes himself as a “family practice” physical therapist noting he enjoys seeing patients, their relatives, and friends. His 28 years of practicing physical therapy in the community has allowed him to establish this personal goal.

Innovation meets play

Courage Kenny’s Director of Assistive Technology, Matt White, started by 3D printing mini power soccer chairs and after a challenge from an MNUFC Power Soccer player, took it to the next level with a fully functioning RC version. Matt was invited to bring the models to practice and the MNUFC team got to demo ahead of their final session before Nationals.

As a bonus, Matt even got to try out a Strike Force chair himself. As Matt says, “This has been a fun home project and rewarding because it involved creating something truly unique—something so niche that it probably wouldn’t exist otherwise.” Cheering on MNUFC as they head to Indiana on 6/25, go Loons!
