Happy National Milk Day!!
These days, there are so many different options on the market, I wanted to share a breakdown of each, the pros and cons, and when I would recommend the milk!
Almond milk: it’s low in calories, contains lots of Vitamin E, and is great for those who have a lactose intolerance and a great substitute to regular milk if you are looking to cut back on calories and lose weight. The downfalls are, it’s low in protein (so I like to have these in protein shakes where you are adding protein) and harvesting almonds in large amounts may be detrimental to the environment
Cashew milk: good source of iron, low in calories, good source of fiber, and is a great for those who have a lactose intolerance and a great substitute to regular milk if you are looking to cut back on calories and lose weight. This is also low in protein so would pair nice with a protein shake where you are adding that in.
Coconut milk: my favorite milk to substitute in my drinks. Low in calories, good source of potassium, great substitute for people who are lactose intolerant, but again a low source of protein.
Dairy milk: high in protein and an excellent source of calcium. So if you are substituting something else for dairy milk, try and make sure it’s fortified with calcium so you are still getting those nutrients. But dairy milk is high in sugar and is not for people with a lactose intolerance.
Soy milk: high in protein, vitamin D & B12, and is lactose free. Those who have a soy allergy, who have too much estrogen in their bodies, and males and females who are trying to become pregnant should use an alternative source of milk
Oat milk: has been all the rage recently and is nut/soy/lactose free, but considerably higher in carbs and calories. If you are looking to cut down on calories and lose weight, I would recommend a different source.
What milks do you like best?!
