Is it possible to breastfeed your baby after undergoing a breast reduction? Short answer: maybe! Just as every pregnancy is different, so too is your breastfeeding journey…especially after a reduction. Most providers will likely suggest a person wait until they have completed their childbearing journey before pursuing a reduction in order to maintain the maximum amount of tissue and avoid reducing milk glands. However, benefits such a decrease in chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain and improved quality of life are incredibly important. Ultimately, talk with your provider to see what makes the most sense to you. And remember, a reduction does not mean breastfeeding is impossible! Working with lactation consultants and educators is one way to improve your chances of success.
