Proprioception.

Think of it as your neck's internal GPS. It's the constant, silent conversation between the tiny sensors in your cervical spine and your brain, telling you exactly where your head is in space without you having to look.

When that signal gets scrambled after a whiplash, a concussion, or years of chronic neck pain, the effects show up in ways that feel disconnected from the neck itself. Dizziness. Poor balance. That foggy sense of not quite knowing where your body ends and the room begins.

That's why we measure it. Objective proprioceptive testing gives clinicians a concrete number for something patients have struggled to describe for years, and it gives you a clear target to retrain.

A healthy cervical spine and a spine with sensorimotor dysfunction following concussion can look identical on imaging, yet perform very differently in the room with you.

Concussion doesn't just affect the brain. It disrupts the sensorimotor system that lives in the neck, the same system responsible for joint position sense, gaze stability, and postural control.

Here's the contrast we see clinically:

A healthy neck shows accurate, well-controlled movement. Joint position error stays tight. Head-eye coordination is steady. Balance holds under dual-task conditions.

Cervical sensorimotor dysfunction tells a different story. Movement control breaks down. Joint position error increases. Patients overshoot targets, report dizziness with head turns, and struggle to stabilise gaze during movement.

This is why symptoms can linger long after the initial injury clears. The proprioceptive input from the upper cervical spine is no longer reliable, and the brain has to work harder to compensate.

Objective assessment surfaces what a standard exam can miss. When you can measure the deficit, you can target the rehab, track progress, and give patients a clear picture of their recovery.

Meet our Clinical Advisory Board - Dr. Julia Treleaven PhD BPhty, FACP
