The Hennepin Assault Response Team (HART) and the Train to Retain: Forensic Nurse Education Program work together to provide specialized medical care to survivors of violence across Minnesota and to advance the field of forensic nursing.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, support survivors in our community by donating to the Hennepin Assault Response Team (HART) Annual Clothing & Food Drive.

HART provides specialized medical forensic care to survivors of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, human trafficking, and other forms of interpersonal violence. Donations of clothing, hygiene items, comfort items, and snacks help us meet immediate patient needs during and after their healthcare visit.

We're proud to have contributed our forensic nursing expertise to the development and review of the Statewide Guidelines for Sexual Assault Examinations, recently released by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. These guidelines establish best practices for law enforcement throughout the sexual assault reporting, investigation, and prosecution process.

Our Nurse Manager, Breanna Heisterkamp, also represented Hennepin Healthcare at the press conference announcing the guidelines, highlighting a critical message: medical forensic care is available regardless of whether someone chooses to report to law enforcement. Survivors deserve access to compassionate, trauma-informed care and options that support their individual needs and choices.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year’s theme, “With Survivors, Always,” reflects the approach we take with patients experiencing domestic or intimate partner violence. We believe survivors, honor their autonomy, and meet them where they are. This means creating realistic, individualized safety plans and providing support without pressure or judgment. Rather than focusing on what we think someone should do, we partner with survivors to help them identify options and make decisions that feel safe and achievable for their circumstances.

Survivors deserve safety. Survivors deserve support. Survivors deserve solidarity. Survivors deserve ACTION. For and beyond, we commit to showing up for survivors, always.

South Dakota Specific Adult/Adolescent 40-hour Didactic SANE Class

Are you a nurse or provider who lives or practices in South Dakota and wants to learn how to provide medical forensic care? We're collaborating with the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault and Avera to host a free, virtual, adult/adolescent SANE class!

A 2-day, hands-on skills lab will take place November 5th - 6th, 2026. More details TBD.

Sexual assault exams from the Hennepin Assault Response Team are now available at Southside Community Health Services in Minneapolis, MN. If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, you do not have to go to the ER. Care is available in a private, quiet space, with a trained nurse. No appointment needed, and there is no charge for the exam.

The Hennepin Assault Response Team (HART) is proud to partner with Southside Community Health Services on what is believed to be Minnesota's first out-of-hospital forensic exam clinic for survivors of sexual violence, starting July 1st, 2026.

This is the vision of former HART sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) and Southside Medical Director Sheila Kennedy, who spent more than 15 years working toward a true one-stop space for survivors. Wrap-around services available in the thoughtfully designed space include mental health care, STI screenings and treatment, and partnerships with organizations serving Latino, African immigrant, Native American, LGBTQ+, and Deaf communities. Our SANEs are on call to conduct forensic exams as part of that full continuum of trauma-informed, survivor-centered care.

Our rockstar Forensic Nurse Examiners Katie and Brittany were out in St. Louis Park again last week to connect with 40 students on the topic of relationship violence. We're so grateful for the continued partnership with St. Louis Park Public Schools and the opportunity to do prevention work with the youth in our communities.

The Hennepin Assault Response Team is hiring casual forensic nurse examiners. As a forensic nurse examiner on our team, you'd provide medical forensic care to survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and human trafficking at our 12 Minneapolis, MN metro area hospitals.

Our recent Forensic Nursing Office Hours session covered medical forensic exam tips and tricks my colleagues have gathered while facilitating SANE Clinical Skills Labs. Preparing content for this session prompted us to reflect on our history of these trainings, and how grateful we are to have had so many opportunities to do them. Since 2020, we've held 42 clinical skills lab trainings in 6 different states, reaching 554 learners!
