It’s amazing how many patients walk into our office and say:

“I wish I would have come in sooner.”

CLAY SHOVELER’S FRACTURE

Originally seen in laborers shoveling heavy clay (hence the name), but now more commonly from:

• Sudden forceful muscle contraction (traps/rhomboids)
• Heavy lifting or pulling
• Golf, football, deadlifts, or jerking motions
• Direct trauma to upper back/neck

Basically: the muscle yanks hard enough to pull off a piece of the spinous process…in this case a very large piece!

This patient had not one, but two clay shovelers fractures.

Symptoms at time of injury:
• Sharp, localized pain at base of neck/upper thoracic
• Pain with:
• Neck flexion
• Shoulder movement
• Tenderness right over the spinous process
• Sometimes a “pop” at time of injury

Cervical spinal decompression is a gentle, controlled traction that helps reduce pressure on discs and nerves in the neck. By creating a slight separation between the vertebrae, it can improve disc hydration, reduce bulging, and take stress off irritated nerve roots. Patients often report relief from neck pain, headaches, and radiating symptoms into the shoulders or arms, especially when combined with corrective care and rehab.

You hear people talk about “community” all the time… but this week we actually got to see it in action.

The chiropractic community doesn’t just adjust spines — it shows up for people.

Patients and friends have stepped up to support my sister-in-law in a big way. Messages, donations, sharing, checking in… it’s been incredible to watch.

At the end of the day, we’re all here to help people — and when one of our own needs it, this community answers.
