In spite of the high heat and strong winds we had a good turn out for the presentation Dave Leite did on the Homestead Act of 1862. The overwhelming majority of those attending had ancestors who homesteaded. Members were encouraged to get a copy of their ancestors homestead file from the National Archives, if they had not done so yet.

Today we had a very interesting presentation by Dr. Daniel Ringrose from Minot State University. He spoke on the digitization of old letters and documents done at MSU; specifically a American-Norwegian family covering the years of 1909 to after WWII. It was very interesting to hear about the work going on at the university to preserve local history and make it available to researchers on-line

We enjoyed a presentation by artist Joan Varty today (April 4, 2026). She shared different styles of rosemalling and pointed out how they differ between areas in Norway. It was a very interesting program.

This morning I learned about a new resource for searching digitized newspapers; it is called Newspaper Finder. You can find what newspapers have been digitized and how to access them.

Newspaper Finder is a catalog to find all newspapers that have been digitized on the internet. Whether you are a historian, genealogist, or archivist, you can explore a comprehensive collection in one place and easily find the newspapers you need.

We have some new members with interest in starting to record their family history. I suggest they start with printing the ancestral chart and family group sheet from the National Archives.
