For the first time in more than 20 years, the FDA has approved a new UV filter for use in sunscreen.

Bemotrizinol (BEMT) is a broad-spectrum UV filter that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays. It has been widely used in Europe and other countries for years and is recognized for its photostability, meaning it remains effective even when exposed to sunlight.

While this approval expands sunscreen options in the U.S., the most important message remains the same: wearing sunscreen every day is one of the best ways to help protect your skin from sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer.

No matter which sunscreen you choose, remember to:
☀️ Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant, sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
☀️ Apply it generously.
☀️ Reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
Have questions about choosing the right sunscreen? Our team is here to help.

Knowing what to look for can help you identify suspicious spots early.

Dermatologists use the ABCDE rule as a guide when evaluating moles and pigmented lesions:

✔ Asymmetry
✔ Border irregularity
✔ Color variation
✔ Diameter larger than 6 mm
✔ Evolving or changing appearance

If you notice a spot that looks different from others or has changed over time, don’t ignore it.

Early detection saves lives.

If you’ve noticed a new, changing, or unusual spot, or if it’s been over a year since your last exam, it may be time to schedule an appointment.

If your skin feels dry, itchy, or tight after showering, the temperature of your water could be part of the problem.

According to dermatologists, long, hot showers can remove the natural oils that help protect your skin barrier.

For healthier skin:
✔ Use lukewarm water
✔ Limit showers to 5–10 minutes
✔ Apply moisturizer immediately afterward

Small changes can make a big difference for your skin.

Most people remember to apply sunscreen to their face, shoulders, and arms, but often forget about their scalp.

Just like the rest of your skin, your scalp can burn from UV exposure, especially if you have thinning hair or a visible part line.

Protecting your scalp can help prevent sunburn and reduce long-term sun damage.

Don’t forget: skin cancer can develop on the scalp, too.

If you’re treating your acne but still experiencing breakouts, your skincare routine could be part of the problem.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, certain habits can actually make acne worse.

When it comes to acne, consistency matters. Most treatments need several weeks to start showing results, and gentle skincare is often more effective than aggressive routines.

If your acne isn’t improving despite your best efforts, a dermatologist can help identify what’s causing your breakouts and recommend the right treatment plan for your skin.

While skincare trends come and go, the fundamentals of healthy skin remain the same.

Dermatologists agree that certain habits are important at every age: wearing sunscreen daily, cleansing gently, moisturizing regularly, and scheduling routine skin exams.

As your skin changes over time, you may choose to address concerns like acne, discoloration, fine lines, or dryness—but the foundation of good skin health never changes.

Take a look at the table above to see what dermatologists commonly recommend prioritizing at different stages of life.
