Tomorrow is National Pickleball Day!!!
Pickleball eye injuries are on the rise due to fast-traveling balls (up to 40 mph), close-range volleys near the net, and hard paddles. Unlike racquetball, pickleball has no mandatory eyewear rule, making personal protection essential. Experts recommend wrap-around polycarbonate or Trivex safety goggles for shatterproof front and side coverage.
Possible Dangers:
Corneal abrasions: Scratches on the eye surface caused by the edge of a ball or a stray fingernail.
Hyphema: Bleeding inside the front chamber of the eye from blunt force impact.
Retinal tears or detachment: Severe separation of the retina that can cause permanent vision loss.
Berlin’s edema: Traumatic swelling of the outer retinal layers leading to temporary or prolonged blurriness.
Lens dislocation: Displacement of the natural crystalline lens inside the eye following a direct blow.
Recommended Safety Gear Specifications:
Lens material: Polycarbonate or Trivex (10 times more impact-resistant than standard plastic or glass).
Coverage style: Wrap-around frames to block stray balls and paddle edges coming from peripheral angles.
Lens enhancements: Anti-fog coatings for heavy sweating, and polarized or tinted options for outdoor glare reduction.
Prevention and Treatment Tips:
Avoid regular glasses: Standard prescription specs or fashion sunglasses can shatter upon high-velocity impact, worsening the injury.
Stay alert at the kitchen line: Double-play matches close to the net yield the shortest reaction windows.
Seek urgent care: Visit an ophthalmologist or emergency room immediately if you experience persistent pain, bleeding, flashes of light, or sudden vision loss after an impact.

Here are three reasons why you should visit your eye doctor every year:
- Detects Early Signs of Chronic Diseases like Diabetes. Regular eye exams are critical because what may seem like a vision-related problem might be an indication of a broader health issue.
- Some Eye Diseases Are Symptom-Free. Getting an annual eye exam can help detect health conditions before they progress and may help preserve your vision.
- Your Vision Might Not Be as Clear as You Think. You may not notice that your vision changed, but an eye exam can reveal if you need glasses, contacts or an update to your current prescription.
