This month, we are excited to highlight China Cotton, RN, as our October Behind the Badge! China is a nurse on the Mishawaka Progressive Care Unit who started her career with Saint Joseph Health System in 2019 as a medical assistant in the Neurology office.

After six years in an outpatient setting and driven by her deep compassion for helping others and providing exceptional care, China decided to transition to bedside care and pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse.

For China, the decision to work at Saint Joe was an easy one - her mother worked in the Sterile Processing Department for 45 years and recently retired. Inspired by her mother’s career and dedication, China knew she wanted to continue that family legacy at Saint Joseph Health System.

China's dedication and commitment to serving others have made her a valued member of the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) team. China says the PCU is special because of the teamwork and camaraderie among colleagues. “Everyone is so helpful,” she shares, highlighting the supportive culture that makes the unit a great place to work.

When she's not caring for patients, China enjoys spending time with her two young daughters and making memories with her family. They especially enjoy watching scary movies together.

China, thank you for the compassionate care you provide every day. We are grateful to have you on our team and proud to celebrate your contributions to Saint Joseph Health System.

Saint Joseph Health System made a strong impact at the annual Marshall County Senior Expo at Plymouth High School, connecting with more than 900 community members to provide valuable health information, services and screenings. The Mobile Medical Unit completed 16 mammograms during the expo, helping improve access to preventive healthcare services in the community.

Several other Saint Joseph Health System departments, including St. Paul's, PACE, Community Health and Well-Being, Saint Joseph Medical Group, Health Insurance Services, Breathe Easy Marshall County, and the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), participated in the event. Ebenezer Kio, MD, a hematologist-oncologist with Saint Joseph Medical Group, also attended to connect with community members and share information about advanced specialty care.

Special recognition goes to Erica Sun Rocha, Annette Haining and Latorya Greene for their leadership and service on the event planning committee. Thank you to everyone who represented Saint Joseph Health System and demonstrated our commitment to improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

During Sterile Processing Week, we recognize and celebrate the dedicated professionals of the sterile processing department who play a vital role in patient safety every day.

While much of their work takes place behind the scenes, its impact reaches every operating room, procedure area and patient care setting across our ministry. We are grateful for all they do and proud to celebrate the team during Sterile Processing Week.

October is Physical Therapy Month and an opportunity to highlight our therapists who work in the pediatric therapy department. Our colleagues see patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including the NICU.

Our physical therapists address deficits that children may have with their balance, strength, coordination, endurance, agility and overall functional mobility both in their home/school environments as well as outside in the community.
