🦵 Did you know your calf muscles are often called the "second heart"?
Although it's not an official anatomical term, the calf muscle pump is commonly referred to as the "second heart" because of the important role it plays in blood circulation.
Every time you walk or move your ankles and legs, your calf muscles—especially the soleus and gastrocnemius—contract and compress the deep veins.
Thanks to the one-way valves inside your veins, blood is prevented from flowing backward and is instead pushed back toward the heart, helping overcome gravity.
That's why staying active strengthens this "muscle pump," improves circulation, and may help reduce swelling, leg heaviness, and other discomforts.
This mechanism is especially important for people who:
✔️ Spend long hours sitting or standing.
✔️ Have chronic venous insufficiency.
✔️ Are at risk for edema (swelling) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
🦶 Activate it in just 2 minutes with this simple exercise!
You can do it anytime from your desk or couch:
1️⃣ Sit with your feet flat on the floor.
2️⃣ Raise your heels as high as possible while keeping the balls of your feet firmly on the ground.
3️⃣ Feel the contraction in your calf muscles, then slowly lower your heels.
4️⃣ Repeat this movement for 1–2 minutes.
If you experience leg pain, swelling, varicose veins, or changes in the skin of your legs, consult a vascular specialist. Early diagnosis can make a significant difference.
