Run the scenario honestly. It's 11 p.m. Someone in your house goes down. Who in that building knows what to do? 🏠

Most cardiac arrests happen at home (American Heart Association). Not the gym, not the office — the hallway, the bathroom, the bedroom. Which means the five minutes we've been talking about all week are, statistically, going to happen at your address, to someone whose name you know.

And there's no team coming through the door in minute one. It's whoever else is awake.

There's no wondering whether to act, no debate about who's in charge. There's a code called, a team assembling, compressions started, and everyone doing the thing they were trained to do while the room fills up. That only works if your piece is automatic.

This is the one that fools people, and it's the reason CPR gets delayed. 😔

Someone collapses. They're not responsive — but every few seconds they make a sound. A gasp. A snore. A gurgle. And the brain of every person in the room says the same thing: they're breathing, so don't touch them.

Occasional gasping is not normal breathing. It's a reflex a body makes as it's shutting down. In our AHA courses we teach you to look for normal, regular breathing — a chest rising and falling steadily. Sporadic gasps don't count.

If they're unresponsive and not breathing normally: call 911 and start compressions. (American Heart Association)

The fear underneath the hesitation is always the same — what if they're actually fine and I hurt them? But a person who is fine will react when you start. And immediate CPR can double or triple survival (AHA), while waiting costs about 10% of their odds every minute.

Biggest myth about the AED: that you need to know how to use it. 🔴

You don't. AEDs are built for regular people, and they talk you through every single step out loud. (American Heart Association)

Here's the entire experience:
🔊 You open the lid. It starts speaking.
🔊 "Apply pads to patient's bare chest." The pads have pictures on them showing exactly where.
🔊 "Analyzing heart rhythm. Do not touch the patient."
🔊 It decides. If a shock is needed, it says so. If not, it will not let you shock. You cannot hurt someone with it.
🔊 "Continue CPR." And you go back to pushing.

That's it. No training required to follow a voice. The training is what makes you willing to grab it in the first place, and confident enough to keep pushing in between.

Read this one slowly. ⏳

Survival from cardiac arrest drops about 10% for every minute that passes without a shock. (American Heart Association)

Minute one — good odds.
Minute five — half of them are gone.
Minute ten — you are largely out of time.

Now go look up the average ambulance response time where you live. Then look at that list again.

This isn't an argument against calling 911. Call 911 — always, first. It's an argument about who fills the gap between the call and the arrival, because somebody is going to, and the only candidate is whoever is already in the room.

Immediate CPR can double or triple survival (AHA). CPR doesn't restart the heart — it keeps the brain alive until something can.

More than 500,000 children and adults have a cardiac arrest each year in the U.S., and fewer than 15% survive (AHA). That number isn't fixed. It's a function of how many of us know what to do in minute one.

This is the whole skill for teens and adults. Two steps. That's it. (American Heart Association) 👐

1️⃣ Call 911.
2️⃣ Push hard and fast in the center of the chest — 100 to 120 times a minute.

No rescue breaths required. No mouth-to-mouth on a stranger. No special equipment. Just your hands, locked, straight down, in the middle of the chest, and you do not stop until help takes over.

Hard means hard — deeper than feels polite. Fast means about two pushes every second. If you're worried you're being too rough, you're probably close to right.

Immediate CPR can double or triple survival (AHA). Every second you spend deciding is a second the brain doesn't get.

The reason to take a class isn't that the steps are complicated. It's that pushing on a real chest for the first time shouldn't happen during the emergency. In class you do it on a manikin, with a coach, until your hands know it.

Small thing we teach in class that changes everything: put the phone on speaker and set it down. 📱

Because here's what actually happens in a real emergency — you call 911 with one hand and try to do compressions with the other, and you do neither well.

Speaker mode. Phone on the floor. Both hands free. Now you can talk to the dispatcher and push at the same time, and you don't have to choose.

While you're on that call: know your address out loud. Say what you see — "he collapsed, he's not responding, he's not breathing normally." Then start pushing and stay on the line.

None of this is complicated. All of it is easier if you've done it once before in a room where nothing is at stake. That's what a class is. 💙

People mix these two up constantly, and the mix-up costs minutes. 🫀

HEART ATTACK — a blocked artery. The person is usually awake. Chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, pain in the arm or jaw. It's a plumbing problem. Call 911 and keep them still.

CARDIAC ARREST — the heart stops. The person collapses, isn't breathing normally, and has no pulse. It's an electrical problem. Call 911 and start CPR immediately. (American Heart Association)

Same organ. Completely different response.

The tell is simple: are they talking to you? If they're awake and complaining, that's a heart attack and you're waiting for EMS. If they dropped and they're not responding, that's cardiac arrest and you're pushing on their chest right now.
