Before You Fish With This Guy, When Was Your Last Tetanus Shot?
Montana fishing season is full of great memories, cold rivers, and the occasional fly that doesn't quite go where it was intended.
And let's be honest — sometimes the biggest catch of the day is your buddy's backcast.
If a fish hook ends up in your ear, cheek, hand, or anywhere else it doesn't belong, one of the first questions healthcare providers may ask is:
When was your last tetanus shot?
According to the CDC:
✔ Adults should receive a tetanus booster every 10 years.
✔ If you have a deep, dirty, or puncture wound, a booster may be recommended if it's been more than 5 years since your last tetanus vaccine.
✔ Fish hooks, cuts, puncture wounds, and other outdoor injuries can create an opportunity for tetanus bacteria to enter the body.
✔ If you're not sure when your last tetanus shot was, it's worth checking.
Tetanus is uncommon, but it can be serious. The good news? It's preventable through vaccination.
So before you trust your fishing partner's casting skills, make sure your tetanus protection is up to date.
