Why is my back always so itchy?!

If you have an itchy back (especially in between your shoulder blades) but you don't have a rash here, this could be nostalgia paresthetica. This is caused by a 'pinched'/inflamed nerve in your back that relays an itch signal to the skin. The itching can start suddenly and go away suddenly at times. When we itch or rub at this area, it can develop a dark patch over time from the friction. Over the counter 'nerve' creams (like IcyHot, Bengay, Biofreeze, etc.) can help turn down the nerve signal in this area and give you relief.

Nummular dermatitis:

Every year around this time I get an influx of rashes. And LOTS of them are nummular dermatitis. This shows up as red, scaly, circular patches on the skin. This is caused by having genetic predisposition to eczema plus dry skin. Our skin also gets drier every year we’re alive, so eventually one winter you pop up with these spots. The most common areas are lower legs and forearms, because these are the driest areas of our body. It is often confused for ringworm because it is circular, red, and scaly. Lots and lots of lotion (especially after showers) and see your local dermatologist!

COVID hair loss: what is it?!

I'm seeing a lot of people come to clinic over the last couple of years with significant hair loss and shedding after COVID. This is a condition called Telogen Effluvium, and it actually can occur after any significant stressor on our body. The stressor/illness/surgery/childbirth causes a disruption in the normal hair cycle. About 3 months after the stressor our hair starts to shed significantly. Normally only about 5% of our hair is actively shedding, while during Telogen Effluvium up to 25-30% can be shedding! This lasts about 3-6 months and then will go back to normal. After this you just have to wait for all of those baby hairs to grow out. There's really not much to do besides wait it out.

Sorry for the incredibly long drought of posts. Like everyone else right now, I've been consumed with the current pandemic. Since one of the most important things we can all do to stem the exponential growth of cases is to wear a mask, I thought I would offer some suggestions to keep your skin healthy while wearing one.

Like most things when it comes to your skin, simpler is better.
1) Avoid wearing makeup under a mask
2) Cleanse your skin twice daily with a gentle face cleanser
3) Apply thin moisturizer during the day and thicker moisturizer at bedtime
4) Wear a mask that properly fits. A lot of the acne and rosacea that comes from wearing a mask is from the friction and rubbing that clogs and irritates the pores.
5) Wash cloth masks daily
6) Carry gentle cleansing wipes and give your face a quick wipe a couple times during the day when you're in a safe place to take off your mask

Wear your mask, do your part. To happy and healthy bodies and skin😷🧼🧴

Shout it from the rooftops! Indoor tanning is really, really, truly bad for you. If the statistics in the article don't shock you, here's another few for you. There is no such thing as a safe tan...

1) Even one indoor tanning session increases your risk of developing melanoma by 29%.

2) Indoor tanning before the age of 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma by 59%, and the risk increases with each use.

3) Women younger than 30 are SIX times more likely to develop melanoma if they tan indoors.

"The model suggested a ban on indoor tanning in the United States and Canada would result in 244,347 fewer melanomas (–8.7%), 89,193 fewer deaths from melanoma (–6.9%), and 7.3 million fewer keratinocyte carcinomas (–7.8%) than continuing at the current levels of use. The ban would also save 428,781 life-years, have a cost savings of $3.5 billion, and confer productivity gains of $27.5 billion, the researchers said."

Banning indoor tanning devices outright in the United States, Canada, and Europe could prevent as many as 448,000 melanomas and 9.7 million keratinocyte carcinomas, according to a recent study.

This is a pretty good overview of what the specialty of dermatology is like for anyone who is wondering. Sometimes I think it is a bit misunderstood. I am very lucky to love my work! Being a dermatologist is my dream job and I love being able to take care of peoples hair, skin, and nails😊

Dermatology is a broad and competitive medical specialty that is often misunderstood.

Excited to do another free skin cancer screening in October. If you’re interested, call soon to sign up! Space is unfortunately limited and always fills up. Insurance covers a skin check as well but this is a nice opportunity to have a free one!

I am so excited about this partnership and our progress so far! People are starting to take notice and are taking steps to protect themselves. Thanks to KSFY for taking an interest in this story. I have also been working with Pioneer Seed company and am excited that they have decided to start offering promotional wide-brimmed hats in addition to their typical baseball cap styles. Hoping hats like these get into the hands of everyone, not just farmers!

I will be speaking about sun protection and skin cancer at Dakotafest on Wednesday, August 21st at 1:30 in the education tent. Bonus, I'll have more of these hats to give out to anyone who could use them!

For each inch of brim, that you wear over consistently of your lifetime, reduces your skin cancer by about ten percent.
