Missouri's lead levels are incredibly high because of historic mining. It has left Missouri children at risk for lead poisoning, which is harmful to every part of the body.

Children 3 and under should be tested yearly for this very reason.

Thinking about leaving your child home alone? Age matters. Young children need adult supervision.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says most children under 12 are not safe to stay home alone without an adult. Even at 11 or 12, some children may still need supervision.

Before leaving a child alone, ask:

✅Can they stay calm and make safe choices in an emergency?
✅Do they know when and how to call 911?
✅Will they follow rules about doors, visitors, cooking, and phones?
✅Can they quickly reach you or another trusted adult?
✅Do they feel safe being alone?

Being ready to stay home alone does not mean a child is ready to care for younger siblings.

If you are unsure, choose adult supervision. Always lock up guns, medications, alcohol, and other dangerous items.
