Mouth breathing in children: not just a habit

A new review in Medicina (2026) brings together paediatric, allergy, ENT and dental perspectives on childhood mouth breathing. Here are 3 takeaways for parents:

1️⃣ It’s a sign, not just a habit. About 1 in 5 children aged 3–18 mouth breathe. When it’s persistent, or happens during sleep, it should be looked into rather than dismissed. Mouth breathing isn’t the same as sleep apnoea, but it can be a sign of an underlying issue that can be treated.

2️⃣ Watch what happens at night. Mouth breathing with snoring or restless sleep may signal a breathing problem during sleep. Even primary snoring (snoring without sleep apnoea) has been linked to difficulties with attention, learning, memory and behaviour.

3️⃣ Find the cause, then treat it. Allergies, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, jaw and palate growth, and tongue and lip function may all contribute. This review highlights the value of paediatricians, allergists, ENT specialists and dentists or orthodontists working together, so each possible cause is assessed.

No single specialist sees the whole picture. By bringing our expertise together, we can better support children’s airway health.
