‼️MONCLOVA/WATERVILLE MONCLOVA
We know construction is inconvenient and detours are not fun but apparently, many drivers think road closed signage is optional. It's only day three of this closure and some drivers are doing the one thing multiple layers of signage before the intersection tell you not to do.

Multiple drivers have been seen using the temporary access path created through Monclova Elementary's north lot, despite it being marked for "Emergency Vehicles only."

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office has been asked to cite drivers illegally using the emergency access path. It's not a shortcut—it's there so first responders can get through when seconds matter, not so you can save yourself a handful of minutes or miles while putting road workers, yourself or the road project itself at risk. You can prepare your commute by leaving earlier. Emergencies don't work that way.

One Team, One Mission!

MONCLOVA TOWNSHIP – Monclova Township Public Works employees David Clark and Greg Nye were following one another out of Clearwater subdivision in a pickup and a chipper truck on July 9 when they saw something unusual: a teen on an e-bike that was billowing white smoke, then “fireballs” as he drove east on Monclova Road.

The two blocked the road to traffic with their vehicles and jumped out to assist the 14-year-old as he dismounted the bike. While Clark stayed with the teen – who also was assisted by two women who left before sharing their names – Nye grabbed an extinguisher from the truck and worked to put out the fire coming from the lithium battery.

Clark believes the teen was still riding 20 mph or more when the fire started, and it took until the Waterside entrance for him to slow down enough to exit the bike. “He probably didn’t know what was going on. When he jumped off, it was a pretty big fire,” he said.

Fire Chief Matt Homik said the two men were able to keep the fire down until crews arrived. The teen was transported to Toledo Children’s Hospital. Later, Holland learned from the boy’s family that he was taken to University of Michigan for burn treatments, noting that it’s not life-threatening.

Public Works Supervisor Doug Holland credits the two employees for their quick thinking. "I think they deserve the keys to the city – except they already have them," he said.

The Fourth of July is one of the best holidays of the year — and one of the busiest for fire and EMS crews across Ohio.
In 2023, fireworks sent 9,700 people to emergency rooms nationwide, with 74% of those injuries happening in the weeks around July 4th (Consumer Product Safety Commission). The most common patient isn't the experienced enthusiast — it's a kid with a sparkler or a parent who tried to relight a dud.
If you're celebrating at home this year, please do so safely.

The heat index this week could reach 110°F. That's not just uncomfortable — it's dangerous.
Every summer, our crews run calls for heat exhaustion and heat stroke that could have been prevented. Most happen to people who didn't realize how fast it can sneak up on them — working in the yard, walking the dog, sitting in a hot car for "just a minute."
Here are a few things that keep you out of the back of our medic unit.
