How Anxiety Can Show Up Physically

Anxiety doesn’t always feel like racing thoughts. Sometimes, your body speaks first.

You may notice:
- Racing or pounding heartbeat
- Tightness in your chest
- Shallow or rapid breathing
- Headaches or dizziness
- Muscle tension, especially in your neck and shoulders
- Stomachaches, nausea, or digestive changes
- Sweating or feeling unusually hot or cold
- Shakiness or trembling
- Fatigue or difficulty sleeping

These physical symptoms can feel scary, but they can also be your body’s response to stress and anxiety.

If anxiety is interfering with your everyday life, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Support is available at Westlake Counseling Services.

Healthy Coping Skill: Deep Breathing

When stress or anxiety feels overwhelming, take a moment to slow down and breathe.

Try this simple exercise:
• Inhale slowly through your nose for 4 seconds.
• Hold for 2 seconds.
• Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds.
• Repeat for a few minutes.

Deep breathing can help calm your body, slow racing thoughts, and bring you back to the present moment.

Remember: You don’t have to fix everything at once. Sometimes, the first step is simply taking a breath.

Back-to-School Blues & Anxiety 📚✏️

The transition back to school can bring more than excitement. New routines, academic pressure, social changes, and busy schedules can leave children and teens feeling overwhelmed.

Signs to watch for:
- Increased irritability or mood changes
- Trouble sleeping
- Frequent stomachaches or headaches
- Avoiding school or activities
- Difficulty concentrating
- Excessive worry about school or friends
- Feeling overwhelmed by the new routine

A little extra support can make a big difference. If back-to-school anxiety is interfering with daily life, counseling can provide a safe space to work through those feelings and build healthy coping skills.

People-pleasing may seem like kindness, but when you're constantly putting everyone else's needs before your own, it can come at a cost.

Saying "yes" when you want to say "no," avoiding conflict, and carrying the weight of everyone else's expectations can leave you feeling emotionally, mentally, and physically drained. Over time, this pattern can contribute to burnout, resentment, anxiety, and a loss of your own sense of self. 🩵

Setting healthy boundaries isn't selfish—it's essential. Taking care of yourself allows you to show up more fully for the people and responsibilities that matter most.

If you find yourself constantly running on empty or struggling to put your own needs first, therapy can help you build healthier patterns and restore balance.

Healthy boundaries look like…

✔️ Saying "no" without feeling guilty.
✔️ Taking time to rest when you need it.
✔️ Communicating your needs clearly and respectfully.
✔️ Protecting your peace, even if others don't understand.
✔️ Recognizing that you are not responsible for everyone else's emotions.
✔️ Choosing relationships that are built on mutual respect.
✔️ Making time for your own mental and emotional well-being.

Setting boundaries isn't about pushing people away—it's about creating healthier relationships with yourself and others. When you honor your limits, you make space for growth, balance, and genuine connection.

If setting boundaries feels difficult, you're not alone. Counseling can help you build the confidence and communication skills to establish boundaries that support your well-being. 🩵

🧠 How to Handle Negative Self-Talk

The way you speak to yourself matters. Negative self-talk can increase stress, lower confidence, and make everyday challenges feel even heavier. The good news? It doesn't have to control your thoughts.

Here are a few ways to challenge negative self-talk:
✨ Notice when it happens without judging yourself.
✨ Ask yourself, "Is this thought based on facts or assumptions?"
✨ Replace harsh criticism with a more balanced, compassionate perspective.
✨ Focus on what you can control instead of worst-case scenarios.
✨ Speak to yourself the way you would speak to someone you care about.

Changing your inner dialogue takes practice, but every small step matters. If negative thoughts are making it difficult to enjoy daily life, counseling can provide the tools and support to help you build healthier thinking patterns.

💙 You don't have to navigate it alone. Westlake Counseling Services is here to help.
