the Catskill Mountains, the Ashram provides a serene, natural environment with woods and meadows surrounding a lake. Accommodations are simple and meals are vegetarian. We offer daily meditation programs with Yoga-Vedanta studies, chanting and readings, and daily yoga and Sanskrit classes, plus classical Indian dance and music instruction and a variety of weekend workshops and special events. The Ashram is open year-round and welcomes guests from all origins, faiths and cultural backgrounds. Ananda Ashram is also the location of the International Schools of East-West Unity (Gurukula), Inc., established by the Founder in 1992. The workshops and courses offered throughout the year cover the various aspects of Yoga, the creative arts and natural health, and East-West cultural performances highlight summer weekends and special celebrations. Guest teachers and artists from a variety of traditions are regular contributors. The Ashram philosophy is nonsectarian with an emphasis placed on Self-awareness and meditation. Guest and student accommodations provide dorm and semiprivate rooms with around sixty beds. Facilities include classrooms, meditation room, program halls, temples, memorial shrine, gift shop, seasonal swimming pool, and publication center. The inspirational Ashram environment is well suited for a meditative retreat, holistic studies and exploration of the deeper aspects of life.

Indian classical music is essentially spiritual. The syntax of Sanskrit and swaras of Sitar will compliment each other in their pursuit of Parampara on occasion of the international Sanskrit day celebrations.

Kinnar Seen, a student of his illustrious father, Ustad Lachman Singh; earned a Master’s degree in Music receiving gold medals. Since the age of 14 he has performed at major music festivals around the world, representing India in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Morocco at the invitation of their governors, and performed even at the residence of John Lennon. Kinnar has presented lectures- demonstrations at leading universities including Harvard, Princeton, Brown, SUNY, and The Juilliard School. Recognized with numerous awards in India and abroad, he was described by The New York Times as ‘a leading artist of India.’ In 1986, Kinnar and his wife Payal, an accomplished vocalist, founded Sangeet Vilas — Kinnar School of Music, through which they continue to teach students in the Guru–Shishya (teacher–student) tradition.

Naren Budhakar was brought up in the Indian classical music tradition and began performing Tabla at a young age. A disciple of Tabla Maestro Ustad Shabbir Nisar, Naren has played with prominent instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers including Pandit Birju Maharaj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj and Shaed Parvez. He has performed at prestigious venues in the U.S. and Europe, providing Tabla accompaniment for various musical genres. He is also a disciple of Shri Aditya Khandwe, a virtuoso vocalist of the Gwalior style of classical Indian vocal music. Naren is co-director of the East-West School of Music at Ananda Ashram, teaching and performing regularly.
