Some good ol Campton history

Happy Tuesday Campton! Today I will be giving you a little background on why the Miller Manor (the assisted living home on highway 11) is called the Miller Manor.
The home was lived in by Joe and Nellie Miller for many years. Joe was a folk musician who was quite well known in the 1980s. He was born in Campton in 1918 to George and Willie Wiggens Miller. He was their only child. His wife was born Nellie Mae Rhodes. She died in 1981. The couple had no children.
Joe remarried Evie Jane Slaton of Bethlehem.

In an article in The Walton Tribune in 1982, Joe was interviewed and shared these thoughts with readers:
"It's like it swells up in me. Then I just have to let it out" said Joe about his love of music.
His nickname was Smokey Joe because " a man said he could make the neck of a guitar smoke as his fingers flew over it".
He worked with country music pioneers like Earnest Tubbs and Eddie Arnold.
Joe made several records through the years with other folk music performers. You can download their music from your favorite music websites. One record was entitled "Silver Threads Among the Gold".
His music can be found in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C. and he was a member of the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Honor.
Joe died in 2009. A picture of Joe is at the end of this post.

I hope you enjoyed this snippet from Campton's musical past. If you have any memories of the Millers or of Joes' music, please share in the comments. Don't forget to like and share my posts.
See you around!
