Since 1966, Family Counseling and Shelter Services has supported individuals and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Today, our agency is facing serious financial and staffing challenges that require immediate action. State and federal funding for these essential services has declined, and collectively, that funding is projected to decrease by an additional **25% this year**.
Our counseling services have been paused, and our counseling office will officially close on August 15 following the end of its lease. The conclusion of the lease presented an opportunity to reduce expenses, reevaluate our operations and begin building a more sustainable path forward.
Our domestic violence shelter, Sunrise House, is also temporarily unable to accept residents while we address staffing shortages and ensure shelter staff receive the training required by our funding partners.

Our highest priority is reopening and preserving Sunrise House. It is the only domestic violence shelter in Monroe County, and the need for emergency safety, support and advocacy has not gone away.
The organizationโs executive director recently retired, and an interim executive director has been appointed. The interim director and board are conducting a comprehensive review of the agencyโs finances, funding, staffing and operations. We are committed to sharing verified information and communicating transparently as this work continues.
To help build a more sustainable future for Sunrise House, we are also launching the Sunrise Society, a new community of monthly donors committed to keeping shelter and support available in Monroe County.
Monthly giving provides dependable support we can plan around as we work to rebuild staffing, maintain our 24/7 hotline and reopen the shelter responsibly.
Community members may join the Sunrise Society or make a one-time donation through our secure Zeffy campaign:

We will also hold a community liquidation sale at our counseling office on August 10 and 11 from noon to 6 p.m. Furniture, office supplies and other items will be available for purchase. Proceeds will support our efforts to stabilize the organization and preserve essential domestic violence services.
For nearly 60 years, Family Counseling and Shelter Services has existed because Monroe County believed survivors deserved somewhere safe to turn. We still believe thatโand we are asking our community to stand with us again.
Please donate, attend the sale, share this message and help us keep safety here in Monroe County.
