For people with sleep apnea, sleep is repeatedly interrupted when their throat collapses multiple times during the night blocking the airway and interrupting breathing. This condition has serious health consequences.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious sleep disorder linked to Parkinson’s disease, dementia, heart disease, and diabetes. Among older adults, the prevalence of sleep apnea is striking. One early study found that 70% of men and 56% of women between the ages of 65 and 99 had sleep apnea.

World Hypertension Day is approaching, on May 17. The concern around hypertension is significant, as uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to serious health complications. However managing hypertension in older adults is not as simple as achieving a target number.

We recognize World Hypertension Day on May 17. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting older adults. In fact, approximately 70–75% of adults aged 65 and older live with hypertension, and by age 75, that number rises to nearly 80%.
