OCD doesn’t usually sound irrational when you’re in it.

It sounds convincing. Responsible. Important. Urgent.

That’s why these beliefs can be so hard to recognize.

The challenge isn’t arguing with OCD better. It’s
learning to notice when OCD is making demands that
no one could realistically meet.

Which of these “rules” does OCD try to sell you most
often?

Anxiety can make things feel urgent even when they are not.

Before checking, asking, avoiding, or trying to figure it out, pause and ask:

“Is this actually urgent, or does it just feel urgent because I’m anxious?”

Not every alarm needs an action. ☕

When people think about recovery, they often imagine anxiety disappearing completely. But for many individuals, progress looks less like the absence of anxiety and more like the ability to engage in life even when anxiety is present.

Maybe it's attending the event, making the phone call, driving the car, going on the trip, or resisting the compulsion. Those moments may seem small, but they are often where meaningful growth happens.

One of the hardest things about OCD is that the impact often happens gradually.

You may not notice at first that you're avoiding certain places, spending more time seeking reassurance, or making decisions based on fear rather than what matters to you.

Over time, OCD can convince you that the safest option is to avoid discomfort. But while avoidance may reduce anxiety in the short term, it often comes at the cost of the life you want to live.

💭 What is one thing OCD has tried to convince you to avoid?

Checking feels helpful because it offers a moment of relief.

You check the lock. You feel better.
You reread the text. You feel better.
You review the memory. You feel better.

Over time, confidence starts coming from the checking behavior instead of from trusting yourself. And when that happens, doubt often grows rather than shrinks.

A helpful question to ask yourself is: “Am I checking because I need information, or because I’m uncomfortable with uncertainty?”

Sometimes the path to greater confidence isn’t finding more certainty. It’s practicing your ability to tolerate not having it. ☕

Our minds generate thousands of thoughts every day. Some are helpful, some are random, and some can feel loud, uncomfortable, or convincing.

One of the most powerful skills we can learn is recognizing that not every thought requires a response. Not every thought needs to be analyzed, solved, challenged, or believed.

Scrupulosity OCD often disguises itself as a search for certainty, reassurance, or being “good enough.” What may look like strong morals, faith, or responsibility can sometimes be OCD demanding impossible levels of certainty.

Disclaimer: Relating to these experiences does not necessarily mean you have OCD. If these thoughts or behaviors are causing distress or impacting daily life, consider consulting a licensed mental health professional.

OCD often disguises itself as responsibility. What starts as wanting to be careful, kind, prepared, or safe can slowly turn into feeling responsible for things that no one could realistically control.

Many compulsions are driven by an attempt to prevent uncertainty, mistakes, or harm. The challenge is that OCD keeps moving the goalpost, convincing you that you need just a little more certainty before you can relax.

Which of these forms of responsibility shows up most often for you? 💭
