It's been over a decade since Alexis D'Achille died, but her legacy lives on through the Alexis Joy D’Achille Center for Perinatal Mental Health at AHN West Penn Hospital: a resource for mothers experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr. Matthew Miller, the director of breast imaging and a radiologist within our Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, recently shared his family's story as part of month.

"Breast Cancer Awareness Month is personal for me.

When I was a first year resident, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was young (29 years old!) and the diagnosis changed the course of both of our lives.

Like many families facing cancer, we experienced uncertainty, fear and countless questions about what came next. Through it all, I witnessed my wife's incredible strength and resilience. I also saw firsthand how important early detection can be. Her cancer was found early, and that made all the difference. Today, I'm grateful to say she is cancer-free, and her experience continues to shape the work I do every day.

My wife's journey is one of the reasons I'm passionate about helping patients access screening, education and care. It's also why Breast Cancer Awareness Month remains so important. 1 in 8 women will develop Breast Cancer and early detection is the best way to overcome a diagnosis.
