This month, we’re shining our Employee Spotlight on Riley Assalone! 🌟

Did you know JADE has an internship program? Riley’s professional journey started right here at JADE during her second year of grad school, when she interned at our Monroeville and Southside locations, shadowing both a daytime Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and evening Outpatient Program (OP).

Riley did such an exceptional job during her internship, and her clinical skills and personality matched our team so well that we couldn’t let her leave! Around graduation, Riley joined the team full-time in the Southside as our nighttime IOP therapist and led that group for about 2.5 years.

She recently transitioned into facilitating our first-ever fully virtual IOP, as she celebrates 3 years of hard work, excellence, and dedication at JADE all while preparing to take her LCSW exam.

When she’s not at work, Riley enjoys spending time at home with her cats, reading, traveling, and cheering at the ballpark!
Riley brings compassion, authenticity, and positivity to everything she does. Her ability to connect with clients and support her coworkers makes a lasting impact on our team every day. We admire her commitment to growth, her passion for helping others, and the care she puts into her work. We are incredibly grateful to have Riley as part of the JADE team and cannot wait to see all she accomplishes in the future!

7-OH / 7-Hydroxymitragynine Products — What People Should Know

You’ll see a growing number of products on shelves and in gas stations that contain 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), often sold under different brand names and formats. 7-Hydroxymitragynine is one of the active alkaloids responsible for Kratom’s effects, it is a concentrated Kratom extract.

⚠️ The biggest concern is strength and consistency:
Doses can range from single-digit mg up to 100+ mg per tablet. That’s a huge gap in potency between products. 7-OH is significantly stronger than traditional kratom and interacts with opioid receptors. Effects can be much more intense than people expect if they don’t know the dosage

⚠️ Addiction is a real concern
Because it acts on opioid receptors, repeated use can lead to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms when stopping. What starts as occasional use can turn into something harder to walk away from.

⚠️ Other issues:
• No consistent industry standardization
• Labels aren’t always reliable
• Some products have been flagged by regulators
• Batch-to-batch strength can vary
• Some may contain additional or unlisted compounds

You’ll find these products in places like smoke shops, gas stations, convenience stores, and similar retail spots. The fact that they’re sold so casually is exactly why people underestimate them.

There’s a reason some people call it “gas station he**in.” It’s not he**in, but it can act on similar receptors, and that nickname comes from how strong and habit-forming it can feel compared to what people expect. Sold in everyday places, but far from mild or harmless as advertised.

🔹 Family Matters Group (Virtual)
A fully remote psychoeducational support group designed specifically for support persons. This group helps family members better understand substance use and mental health, while gaining practical tools to support their loved one in recovery.

🔹 The Family Room (In-Person | Monthly at Each Site)
A unique opportunity for individuals in treatment to attend with a support person. Together, participants: Have conversations that often go unspoken, learn about substance use and mental health, explore how recovery impacts relationships, practice communication that supports healing, and strengthen their support system

Both programs are co-facilitated by Abbey Sandberg alongside her certified therapy dog Daphne, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
