20 years ago this month, in January 2002, I jumped head first into the world of Chinese Medicine. I started the 4 years of schooling that drilled in this ancient model of health alongside Western biomedicine. From day one I was hooked. It was a modality that brought together so many of my interests: in alternative medicine and herbalism, in the natural world, in science, and in Asian traditions. It is a field of work that has infinite room for growth and learning, and in the years since I have not stopped being a student. I have taken many diversions off the path into complementary studies, such as aromatherapy and cranio sacral therapy, but the main foundation throughout it all has remained Chinese Medicine. It is quite an elegant and air tight model, and I’m still blown away by it on a regular basis. And nothing keeps me going more than hearing that I’ve been able to help a client feel better. I’m incredibly thankful for this life path that will forever keep me learning and growing.

The nature of nature is change. We live on a planet of cycles. Winter changes to spring, night turns to day. We are born, we age and we decline. This is the way of things. In the Chinese model of Yin and Yang, one element grows and builds until it reaches its apex and then transforms into the other. This is also a model for what we are experiencing right now. Our planet had been experiencing an exuberance of Yang: building, growing, expanding, doing, producing. And now that Yang has suddenly shifted to Yin: non-doing, quiet, reduced movement, slowing productivity. For some of us, this may be challenging because it is a drastic shift from what we are used to. However, it is a great practice to cultivate. Take time for introspection, slow the pace of your day, shift to states of peace and gratitude, stop and notice nature, take deep breaths. nourish yourself, sleep, rest, recover. Getting in touch with our Yin nature will literally help us heal the planet and save each other. Embrace it.

Have you ever noticed the incredible similarity of the structure of a Tree and the structure of the bronchioles in our Lungs? It’s astounding, isn’t it? In fact, we and the tress are not so different; we are mirrors of each other. We breathe in O2 and breathe out CO2 which means that the trees breathe in what we exhale, and breathe out what we need to survive. If you really think about this, we are all breathing in synchronicity with the plants. Does it surprise you, then, that at a time when the earth’s forests are at their greatest demise, and after millions and millions of acres recently burned in Australia, that we humans are now plagued by a respiratory illness? We are intricately intertwined with Earth’s delicate balance; we cannot escape this fact. It is critical that we, as a global community, wake up to this. Take the time now to go outside, connect with the trees and thank them for supporting your ability to live on the planet. Beyond oxygen, the plants also offer us medicine in the form of Herbs and Essential oils. As the earth supports us, we need to support the earth in return.

What a week, friends, what a week. And just like that, our whole world has changed. I’ve been riding the waves of emotions that are coming up in the midst of these unprecedented challenges. I’m implementing my personal self-care practices and it feels something like spiritual boot camp. But, in the midst of it all, I need to remember to be kind to myself, and let myself feel all the emotions that are arising right now. I stopped by my office yesterday to pick up supplies and was struck by how much I miss all of you, all of my clients. The reality hit me that I may not be seeing you in person for a long while to come, and I realized how much healing I receive in exchange from working hands-on with all of you. So, I want to say Thank You, for all these years trusting in me and allowing me to help you in all the ways I am capable of. I’d also love to hear from you what you are needing in these times, and how I can be of service to you moving forward. At some point soon, once I get more ground under my feet, I’ll be exploring the ways I can connect to you virtually, and I’m open to receiving your feedback. Sending you all love from the bottom of my heart. Stay healthy, safe and sane.

As the situation around covid 19 escalates, I’ve been heavily considering my role as healer with my ethical responsibility for social distancing. I want to continue to be of service, but also worry about my possible role as a vector for spreading the disease. I’ve spent a lot of time researching this disease and weeding through the hype from the facts. All reputed scientific sources indicate that this is a highly contagious disease, and that social distancing is the most ethical thing to do to slow its spread and to protect vulnerable members of our community. The trouble is, none of us can be certain that we aren’t contagious, and because of this, the safest thing to do is avoid close contact with others until we know the trajectory of the disease in our area. Once things settle down, I will look forward to being of service to you again! In the meantime, if you are a current client of mine, I would be happy to hold phone sessions to discuss ways I can be of support to you. Stay healthy and safe, and stay connected! Sending Love ❤️

Remembering my teacher today, Dr Wang Ju Ye. He was an insatiably curious, humble and generous man, who I had the privilege of studying with for a number of intensives in Beijing, his home town, as well as New York and California. The mark of a good teacher is someone who shares their knowledge without reserve or hesitation, and encourages their students to explore the material and then come back and share their own impressions and insights. He was constantly contemplating the myriad applications of Chinese medical theory, always inquiring as to how better understand the classical texts, and refining his approach. Dr Wang was both scholar and practitioner, and brought to life the place where these two converged.

A few weeks ago I went on vacation, and as it turned out, had no Wi-Fi or cellar network for over two weeks. And let me tell you, it was amazing! What I noticed most was a definitive improvement in my ability to focus and be present with everyone and everything around me. Distracting thought tangents or mental to-do lists didn’t bombard my brain. Yes, part of this of course was the fact that I was on vacation and didn’t have any responsibilities, but it was different somehow. I really saw how the way we receive information - in short sound bites and video clips - and the pure volume of it all, has changed the way my brain processes things. Being away from those influences I was able to just BE in a way that I didn’t realize I hadn’t been doing! My meditations were more focused, and my mind did not wander from the pages of my book or from a conversation. Unplugging from our screen driven world I was able to plug more deeply into myself.
