Here's the number to know: 150.

That's how many minutes of moderate activity older adults should get each week, plus muscle-strengthening exercises on 2 days and a little balance work.

It breaks down to about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. A walk. A stretch. A few minutes of standing practice by the counter.

Walking is one of the simplest things a senior can do for their health. Pair it with a few minutes of chair exercises, stretching, and balance work, and it becomes one of the most protective things they can do too.

Small, steady movement, most days, matters more than any single workout.

You don't need a gym membership to stay active after 65.

Pulling weeds in the garden. Swaying to a favorite song in the kitchen. Vacuuming the living room. Walking the dog around the block and chasing a grandchild across the backyard. All of it counts.

The National Institute on Aging includes gardening and playing with grandchildren on its own list of activities that qualify as meaningful movement for older adults. The activity doesn't need to look like exercise to do a body good. It just needs to keep your loved one moving.

For families supporting an aging parent, that's good news. You don't need to add anything new to the calendar. You just need to notice what they're already doing, and encourage more of it.

What's your loved one's favorite way to stay moving?

Vaccine appointments can feel like just one more thing on an already full plate. Between coordinating schedules, remembering medications, and making sure your loved one feels comfortable, it's easy for the small details to slip. A little preparation goes a long way toward making the visit feel calm instead of rushed, for both of you.

๐Ÿ”น Bring a current medication list, including doses
๐Ÿ”น Wear short sleeves so the caregiver can get in and out easily
๐Ÿ”น Offer water beforehand, staying hydrated helps
๐Ÿ”น Ask the doctor if any vaccines can be given during the same visit
๐Ÿ”น Keep an eye out for mild soreness or tiredness over the next day or two, that's normal

None of this takes much extra time. It just makes the whole visit a little easier on everyone.

Flu. COVID-19. RSV. Shingles. Pneumococcal. Five names, one conversation.

Most of these vaccines are recommended based on age and health history, not a one-size-fits-all schedule. The easiest way to know what your loved one actually needs is to ask their doctor directly, using this list as a starting point.

Your immune system doesn't clock out at 65. It just gets more selective about what it responds to.

As we age, the body produces fewer new immune cells and takes longer to recognize threats it hasn't encountered before. Researchers call this immunosenescence, which is a complicated word for a simple fact: the immune system slows down.

This slowdown is exactly why vaccines carry more weight after 65.
A vaccine gives an aging immune system a head start. Instead of building a defense from scratch during an active infection, the body already has a blueprint ready to use.

The effect shows up in real numbers. Flu vaccination has reduced the risk of flu-related hospitalization among older adults by about 40% on average. Yet adults 65 and older still make up an estimated 70 to 85 percent of seasonal flu-related deaths each year.

No vaccine guarantees immunity. Even so, staying current meaningfully shifts the odds in a senior's favor.

For families supporting an aging parent, that shift matters. A vaccine isn't just a shot. It's one less trip to the emergency room and one more ordinary Tuesday at home.

August is Immunization Awareness Month.

For seniors, staying current on vaccines is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy and stay home, which is where most of them want to be.

This week, we're breaking down what families in Montclair and Parsippany should know about vaccines for aging adults, from flu shots to pneumonia vaccines to overlooked boosters.

Pull up your loved one's vaccination records this week and see what's current. If something looks out of date, save this post. We'll walk through exactly what to do about it before the week is out.

July has been full of sunshine, activity, and long days. As the month wraps up, there's one thing worth coming back to that tends to slip through the cracks all summer long.

Hydration and nutrition.

Seniors are more vulnerable to dehydration than younger adults, and the signs are often subtle. Fatigue that gets written off as the heat. Confusion that comes on gradually. A loss of appetite that seems minor until it isn't.

A few simple reminders to carry into August.

๐Ÿ”ต Water first, always. Offer it throughout the day without waiting for thirst.

๐Ÿ”ต Small meals more often. Heat reduces appetite. Smaller, more frequent meals are easier to manage and easier to keep up with.

๐Ÿ”ต Cool, hydrating foods. Watermelon, cucumbers, yogurt, smoothies. Foods with high water content also count toward hydration.

๐Ÿ”ต Watch for warning signs. Dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness, and unusual tiredness are all signals worth taking seriously.

๐Ÿ”ตSummer wellness isn't just about what happens outside. It's about what's happening at the table every day.

A day to recognize the people who built the lives, families, and communities we get to be part of. The ones who showed up long before anyone was paying attention, and kept showing up anyway.

To every senior we have the privilege of caring for, and to every family who loves them, thank you.
