When conflict or performance anxiety shows up, short tools can help you come back to each other. Try these two evidence-based techniques:

1) Grounding: pause, plant your feet, breathe 4–4–4 (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4).

2) Name 3 things you can see, 2 you can touch, 1 you can hear. Repeat until your body slows.

3) Brief cognitive reframing: notice the distressing thought, label it (“story, not fact”), and replace it with a neutral, kinder alternative (e.g., “I’m nervous” → “Nervousness is normal and I can cope”).

Use these in the moment to reduce avoidance and defensiveness so intimacy and connection have room to return.
