You might be doing everything “right” and still feel like something is off…

😴 Mouth breathing (especially during sleep or rest) is more important than it seems.
🍽️ Messy eating or the tongue pushing forward
can be worth paying attention to.
👀 These small habits can affect how speech develops. Early awareness makes a difference.

Sometimes, it’s not about how much your child is talking but how their mouth is functioning.

Things like mouth breathing or tongue positioning can play a bigger role than most parents realize.

The tricky part?

These signs are easy to overlook.

If you’ve ever had that gut feeling… it’s worth paying attention to 💛

Speech development is about more than just “waiting it out.” 👶🗣️

When delayed sounds and tongue thrust patterns are present, early assessment can help uncover underlying oral function and airway concerns before they become bigger challenges later on.

Supporting speech early can positively impact communication, feeding, breathing, sleep, and confidence 💙

Some speech patterns are more than “just a phase” 🚩

As parents, it can be hard to know what’s “normal” speech development and what may need extra support. While every child develops differently, some signs shouldn’t be ignored — especially when they impact communication, feeding, or oral development.

Here are 3 signs your child may benefit from a speech and language evaluation:

👅 Tongue thrust during speech or feeding
If your child pushes their tongue forward while talking, swallowing, or eating, this may indicate an orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD).

🗣️ Difficulty producing sounds like /s/ and /z/
A lisp or distorted speech sounds can sometimes be linked to tongue posture and oral muscle function — not just articulation alone.

⏰ Delayed speech sound development
Many speech-language pathologists begin targeting delayed phonemes around age 5 with the goal of mastery by age 6, rather than waiting until age 8.

Early intervention can support:
✔️ Speech clarity
✔️ Oral function
✔️ Feeding skills
✔️ Airway development
✔️ Confidence and communication

If you notice these signs, consider an evaluation with a speech-language pathologist trained in orofacial myology and an airway-focused dental professional.

Not all speech delays look the same — and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to toddler speech development.

Some children are late talkers, while others may need extra support with communication, language skills, articulation, or developmental milestones. That’s why understanding the why behind a speech delay matters so much. 💛

As parents, it’s easy to compare milestones or feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice online. But the goal isn’t to panic or jump to conclusions — it’s to stay informed, aware, and supported while helping your child grow and communicate with confidence.

Early intervention, speech therapy support, language-rich activities, and parent education can make a huge difference for many children. Trust your instincts, ask questions, and remember: you do not have to navigate speech concerns alone.

Follow along for parent-friendly speech tips, toddler development support, language milestone guidance, and real-life encouragement for every stage of parenting. ✨

There is nothing more meaningful than hearing a parent say their child is making progress 💛

Families want to know their child feels supported, understood, and encouraged while building communication skills and that’s exactly why compassionate, individualized speech therapy matters so much.

Whether a child is working on speech sounds, language development, social communication, apraxia, fluency, or confidence expressing themselves, progress happens best when families feel supported too ✨

Parent testimonials like this remind us that communication growth is about more than milestones — it’s about helping children feel confident, connected, and heard.

So many parents today feel pressure to do everything “right”, especially when it comes to child development, speech, language, behavior, and communication milestones 💛

But here’s what I wish more parents understood:
you do not have to be a perfect parent to meaningfully support your child.

Awareness is powerful.
Connection matters.
And learning alongside your child is enough 🌿

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I see how much parents care. I also see how overwhelming modern parenting can feel — especially for Gen X and midlife parents raising kids in a completely different communication world than the one we grew up in 📱💬

Today’s kids are navigating:
✨ Faster communication
✨ More screen time
✨ Social media & digital interaction
✨ Different social expectations
✨ Constant stimulation

That’s a lot for parents *and* kids.

Supporting communication development doesn’t require perfection. Small everyday moments matter:
💛 Conversations at dinner
💛 Reading together
💛 Listening without rushing
💛 Helping kids express feelings
💛 Creating connection before correction

You are not behind.
You are parenting in a different era and showing up matters more than getting it perfect ✨

If you’re a Gen X or midlife parent, you probably grew up in a world without smartphones, texting, social media, or constant digital communication 😅

We learned social skills face-to-face. We called house phones. We figured things out as we went.

Today’s kids?
They’re developing communication skills in a completely different environment 📱💬

From emojis and voice notes to screen time, online friendships, and changing social expectations, communication development looks very different than it did when we were growing up.

That doesn’t mean today’s parenting is “wrong”, it just means parents are navigating a new landscape that nobody prepared us for. 💛

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, one of the biggest things I want parents to know is this:
communication is more than talking.

It includes:
✨ Social interaction
✨ Emotional expression
✨ Conversation skills
✨ Listening & comprehension
✨ Confidence
✨ Nonverbal communication

And yes, the way kids learn and use those skills today has changed.

You are not behind for learning alongside your child 🌿
