“I can’t make it to class with my schedule.”

“The class you offer isn’t what I’m looking for right now”

I hear this often. And honestly, all I hope for is that people find the benefits of yoga in their life someway and somehow.

A one-on-one approach to developing a home practice can offer just that: a practice shaped around your body, your needs, and your actual life. With the guidance of someone skilled in yoga therapeutics, your practice can become a meaningful and sustainable source of support—not another thing on your to-do list.

This is what my daily morning practice looks like these days. Though this video is sped up 5xs.
-20 minutes asana focused on opening the front line of the body.
-10 minutes of Resonance (5:7) Nadi Shodhana.
-10 minutes meditation.

What might your home practice look like?

What actually makes yoga therapeutic?

You might look at this photo and think “That type of backbend doesn’t look very therapeutic to me for my body? What happened to the one blanket option?”

The secret to practicing yoga therapeutically is that the magic and effectiveness isn’t in the pose itself—it’s in how it is customized to the individual.

How can these pieces connect to benefit you:

Restorative Yoga uses props to create a safe, supportive environment so your body can completely rest and release tension.

Therapeutics focuses on the specific benefits of the shape, like opening the chest, supporting the spine, and soothing the nervous system.

Yoga Therapy ties it all together by adapting these tools to meet you exactly where you are today.

A backbend is only therapeutic if it benefits your unique body and energy in this exact moment. For one person, that might mean this chair setup. For another, it may be a single, perfectly folded blanket. Both are deeply powerful because both respect your body’s current needs.

We don’t force our bodies to fit the yoga.
We shape the yoga to fit us.

My teacher Judith Hanson Lasater says "If you are getting older, do backbends" and we all are getting older every day, no matter what our age. Back bending does not have to be extreme to be beneficial, and when we do a gentle supported backbend in a therapeutic way we are reaping more than the benefits of the physical body, we are also allowing a moment in our day to pause, slow down, do less and breathe.

Go to my Practices page on my website for a tutorial on a One Blanket Supported Backbend.

“The discipline of yoga must be practiced with joy, reverence, and happiness in order to receive the fullest benefits possible. Otherwise, yoga is just hard work, just another way to discipline an unruly body and mind.”
-Mukunda Stiles

What does it feel like when you step onto your mat? What does it feel like when you step off of your mat? Is yoga your work-out or your work-in? Is it about discipline or consistency? Is it about more suffering or more joy? What did you learn about yourself at the end of your practice and what tools did you gain to navigate life with more ease?

Yoga is a lifelong practice and a lifelong study of your ever changing self. It is a whole person approach to health and wellbeing that is layered well beyond the physical postures. I hope you find a teacher that gives you the agency and the information to cultivate a lifelong practice that brings you more joy, more discernment and more ease in your body and your mind.
