**3 Signs Your Child’s Speech May Not “Just Fix Itself” 👀**

This is one of the most common questions I hear from parents—especially when it comes to speech sounds 💛

While some errors are part of normal development, here are a few signs your child may need extra support:

✨ **1. You understand them… but others don’t**
If you can understand your child but teachers, friends, or family members struggle, this can be a sign of a speech sound delay.

✨ **2. They leave sounds out or change them**
For example:
➡️ “poon” for *spoon*
➡️ “tat” for *cat*
➡️ “wabbit” for *rabbit*

These patterns can stick around longer without support.

✨ **3. Their speech isn’t getting clearer over time**
As children grow, their speech should become easier to understand. If progress feels slow or “stuck,” it’s worth looking into.

💡 **Here’s the bottom line:**
Some children do outgrow mild errors—but others need a little help to get there.

Early support can make a huge difference in clarity, confidence, and success at school.

📞 If you’re in the Montgomery area and have concerns about your child’s speech, I’m always happy to chat and help you figure out next steps.

One of the best parts of my job? Watching confidence grow. 💛

When a child becomes easier to understand:
✔️ They speak up more
✔️ They participate more
✔️ They feel proud of their voice

Speech therapy isn’t just about sounds—it’s about helping kids feel confident being heard.

Those little wins add up to something big. 😊

If your child is struggling to be understood, I’d love to help.

One of the most rewarding parts of voice therapy is helping clients discover strategies that reduce vocal strain and improve confidence using their voice in everyday life. 💛

A recent client shared this with me after therapy:

“I appreciate your expertise in helping me. I am seeing improvement. One music director would have us ‘put an imaginary ping pong ball in our mouth’ as part of our warm up to sing. I recalled those instructions as being similar to your instructions to speak less with the vocal cords and allow more sound to come through my mouth, putting less strain on the vocal cords. God bless you! Thank you!”

Messages like this mean so much to me because they remind me that therapy goes beyond the therapy room — it carries over into conversations, hobbies, church, singing, work, and daily life. 🎤

Not all speech delays are the same—and that matters. 👀

Two common areas I work with are:

✔️ **Articulation** – difficulty producing specific sounds (like /r/, /s/, or /k/)
✔️ **Phonology** – patterns of sound errors that affect how words are understood

The good news? These are very treatable with the right approach. 🙌🏻

Every child’s speech system is unique, and therapy is tailored to meet them where they are.

If you have questions about your child’s speech clarity, I’m here to help. 💛

“Will my child grow out of this… or should I be concerned?” 🤔

If your child is hard to understand, you’re not alone—and it’s okay to ask questions.

Here are a few signs speech sound support might help:
• You understand them, but others don’t
• They leave out or change sounds in words
• Their speech sounds younger than other kids their age
• They get frustrated trying to be understood

Clear speech builds confidence—and early support can make a big difference. 💛

If you’ve been wondering, I’m happy to help you figure out next steps.

When My Clients Call Me Out 😄

Kids notice everything. And if something is off, they’re going to say something about it… whether you’re ready or not 😄

Yesterday, I was feeling extra tired. One of my 5-year-old clients noticed the sleepy look in my eyes and decided to educate me on proper coffee habits. Apparently, if I would just stop drinking coffee at night and go to bed earlier, I wouldn’t be so tired during the day. (I tried to explain that I don’t drink coffee at night… she wasn’t convinced 😂)

At one point she looked at me very seriously and said,
“You have that couch in your office. Are you going to take a nap today?”

And when I said, "Yes, if I'm able to get all of my work done," she said, "Good. You really should.”

___

But this wasn’t the first time one of my tiny clients has called me out.

A few years ago, I came to work sick—no voice, coughing, the whole thing—and tried to push through the day.

About halfway through a session, one of my preschoolers stopped me, rubbed my back, laid her head on my shoulder, and said:

“Miss Renee’, I really think you should go home.” 🥹

And honestly… she was right.

One thing I love about working with kids is how honest and observant they are. They notice when something is off, and sometimes they remind us to slow down and take care of ourselves too 💛

So if a 5-year-old ever tells you to take a nap…

You might want to listen 😄

One of the most common questions I get as a speech therapist:

“When should I be concerned about my child’s speech?” 👀

Here are a few simple things to look for:

✨ By age 2, you should understand about 50% of what your child says
✨ By age 3, that jumps to about 75%
✨ By age 4, most of what they say should be understood by others

If your child is hard to understand, it doesn’t automatically mean something is “wrong”—but it might be worth taking a closer look 💛

Working with children who have difficulty being understood due to speech sound differences is my specialty. Early support can make a big difference!

Feel free to message me if you ever have questions 😊
