Sometimes, the right care doesn't just improve someone's quality of life—it can change the course of their future.

When a young man arrived at Walker Rehabilitation Center, declining abilities after a medical procedure made it necessary for him to leave his group home, and the expectation was that he would remain in long term care.

But the Walker Rehab team saw possibilities.

He was no longer able to feed or dress himself and initially, traditional therapy approaches were challenging for him because he had difficulty understanding and following directions.

Together therapy, nursing, and dietary staff developed an individualized approach built around positive reinforcement—and even a couple of his favorite things, chocolate milk and dill pickle chips. The team found ways to connect with him, encourage participation, and help him make remarkable progress.

What began as a long term care stay is ending very differently: last week, he returned to his group home.

Congratulations to Walker Rehab's Therapy team, led by Charles Thompson; Nursing team, led by Brian Dunn; and Dietary team, led by Leigh Thomas, for demonstrating what can happen when skilled care is truly centered around the individual.

This is skilled care. This is why we exist.

🎄 75 Stories of Care | Angels Among Us

At Highlands Care Center in Scottsboro, a beloved Christmas tradition reminds residents—past and present—that they are always part of the Highlands family.

Each year, the facility's Family Council fills its Angel Tree with ornaments honoring current residents and remembering those who once called Highlands home. Community members purchase the Angels, and proceeds help fulfill residents' needs and wishes throughout the holiday season.

🏇 75 Stories of Care | Keller Landing Derby

When residents can't make it to the Kentucky Derby, Keller Landing in Tuscumbia brings the Derby to them!

Residents donned their favorite Derby hats, sipped mint juleps, cheered on staff races, watched the Kentucky Derby together, and even competed in their own friendly race.

One resident, who joked he couldn't win because he didn't have any toes, surprised everyone by taking first place. The confidence he gained that day inspired him to work even harder in restorative therapy—and today he's standing from his wheelchair and walking during therapy.
