Mentor Monday Spotlight: Brett Scruggs, CRNA | Baptist Medical Center Montgomery

Confidence grows when students are given the space to think and the structure to succeed.

Brett Scruggs consistently models calm, decisive leadership while allowing SRNAs to work through situations independently. That intentional balance of guidance and autonomy helps transform knowledge into real clinical judgment.

As SRNA Ryan Lang shared, Brett “trusted me to think through situations independently,” and that trust helped build confidence that extends far beyond a single rotation.
By empowering students to step into their decision-making role, Brett is helping shape thoughtful, capable CRNAs ready for independent practice.

The AANA Mentorship Program has been in existence for over 20 years, identifying and developing future leaders in nurse anesthesia. Programs nominate standout students, who are then paired with AANA leaders at the Mid-Year Assembly.

This year, UAB nominated Ryan Lang () who was paired with former ALANA President and AANA Board member Heather Rankin. Together, they spent the day networking, connecting with fellow residents, and preparing with the ALANA team to lead advocacy efforts.

A fantastic delegation of CRNAs and SRNAs from Alabama, alongside colleagues from across the country, met with lawmakers to advance priorities that protect patient access, support our workforce, and strengthen the future of nurse anesthesia. More than 1,300 CRNAs and SRNAs descended on the Capitol to meet with legislators on both sides of the aisle and advocate for our profession.

We want to give a huge thank you to our SRNAs. Your preparation, professionalism, and willingness to step into these conversations set the tone for the future of our profession. You showed up, spoke up, and represented CRNAs incredibly well.

We also want to recognize the CRNAs who took time away from their practices, families, and personal lives to be there. Advocacy requires sacrifice, and your presence made these conversations meaningful and impactful.

Special recognition goes to our Federal Political Director, David Gay, whose planning and coordination made this week productive, efficient, and as impactful as possible.

At a time when healthcare costs continue to rise and the need for skilled providers is greater than ever, utilizing CRNAs to deliver safe, high quality, and cost effective care is a common sense solution. Expanding access to care for patients, including our veterans, is more vital than ever.

Mentor Monday Spotlight: Joy McRee, CRNA | RMC Anniston Hospital

During a clinical rotation where students could choose their rooms each day, SRNA Taylor (pictured right) kept coming back to Joy’s room—and it’s easy to understand why.

Joy creates the kind of learning environment that can shape an early clinical experience in all the right ways. She helps new SRNAs settle in, builds confidence from the start, and makes room for growth without making the day feel intimidating. Especially in those first rotations, that kind of presence matters.

What stands out about Joy is the way she makes learning feel both productive and enjoyable. Students can ask questions, stay engaged, and keep building skills in an environment that feels supportive, approachable, and genuinely positive.
For a new SRNA, working with someone like Joy can make the transition into clinical feel more natural. That kind of experience sticks with students long after the rotation is over.

RMC Anniston is so lucky to have you, Joy! Thank you for your service to and support of the next generation of Alabama CRNAs!
