Community Belonging Matters ❤️

People with disabilities deserve more than a place to live—they deserve a place in their community.

There is a profound difference between simply caring for someone and helping them build a meaningful, connected life. Institutional settings can separate people from the neighborhoods, relationships, opportunities, and everyday experiences that make a community feel like home.

Community integration means belonging. It means having opportunities to:

🏡 Live in homes and neighborhoods alongside people without disabilities
🤝 Build genuine friendships and relationships
💼 Work, volunteer, and contribute their talents
🛍️ Shop, eat, worship, learn, and participate in everyday community life
🎨 Enjoy hobbies, activities, and events based on their own interests
🗣️ Make choices about their lives and have their voices heard
Inclusion isn't about doing things for people with disabilities. It's about making sure people have the support, access, and opportunities to participate alongside everyone else.

Every person deserves to be known by their name—not defined by a diagnosis. They deserve neighbors, friends, purpose, choice, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Community isn't just where we live. Community is where we belong. And people with disabilities belong, too. ❤️

The impact of Dolly Parton's life, which was filled love and compassion for all, touched so many, including some of our friends here at The Center. Just a few years ago, she was the inspiration for one of our Halloween Costume Parties.

In addition to the numerous community events our CDS Consumers get to enjoy, we also have wonderful opportunities for our friends to showcase their creative skills. Last week our local artisans created floral masterpieces to take home. We are always so impressed with the many talented expressions that our friends demonstrate. Way to go!

This week our Development Service Supervisors attended the NAQ 26 Conference in Savannah. There they attended workshops from national industry leaders, heard about current trends and resources, and were able to network with other DS professionals from all around the Country. We are thankful for their dedication to provide excellent care and support to those we serve. They were also able to make their travels a bit entertaining by choosing each other’s Tshirts for the airport and our Executive Director also attended in spirit.

The county results of the 2026 Illinois Youth Survey are in! Our Prevention Staff work in conjunction with the University of Illinois School of Social Work's Center for Prevention Research & Development and every school district in Piatt and DeWitt Counties to collect, analyze, and report on the data collected from the self-reports of all 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in both Counties. To view your County-specific info check out the following links.

First Impression for Piatt County is while overall usage appears to be down, age of experimentation for alcohol is getting younger, consumption of alcohol mixed with energy drinks are up, and all reports of mental health appear to be slightly declining when compared to the 2024 results. These numbers are incredibly helpful as we learn how best to strategize efforts and resources.

This report was prepared by the Center for Prevention Research and Development at the University of Illinois and funded in whole or in part by the Illinois Department of Human Services through a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
